How Losing my Dad Changed Our Lives and Brought Us Here

Rivers and Roads LLC was born on January 1st, 2022.

Everything changed on May 1st, 2021 when I got the call. My dad had passed away. He had just been at our home in TN 3 days prior, following years apart due to COVID restrictions. During the time between that phone call and his memorial service in June, my husband and I began questioning E V E R Y T H I N G. Why were we still carrying on in a corporate-driven life when we had been dreaming for 11 years to be full-time makers, working alongside each other, living debt-free and creating a life for our children that reflected our values of sustainability, conscious living, and integrity? Life is just too short to push aside your dreams. But we didn't quite have the resolve to move past the questioning phase, yet.

Meanwhile I was missing my dad. I started buying candles and would light one each day in honor of him. Then, while attending his memorial, I heard one of my brothers talk about what he loved and would miss the most about my dad, his stubbornness. Sounded strange. He went on to describe my dad in a different light than I had ever considered. You see, my dad was a creative. He was a brilliant artist, skilled leather smith, and a graphic designer. And his stubbornness to live a life of creativity over materialism wasn't something I had even recognized when he was alive. But in that moment at his memorial, I realized this stubbornness was his greatest gift to me. When we left Nashville, IN following the memorial, my husband and I were renewed in our resolve to change our lives to live in our integrity. We both knew our next step. We quit the corporate world, sold our home, moved back to Indiana into my mother's basement (!!) with our 3 little kids, determined to start over and do things our way.

I had decided when my dad passed we would celebrate more often, and really pay attention to the moments we were afforded to celebrate. We had been mulling over business ideas for 5 months and kept coming back to check our intentions: live sustainable, leave a small footprint, serve others, be open and transparent, provide the best service or product available at a price point that most anyone can afford. Then, Yule 2021 sparked the idea that changed everything. I was shopping for beeswax candles for our Yule log. I found myself searching endlessly for affordable options that were also transparent about their product. I didn't want to buy from a corporate source, I wanted to support a small business and feel good about what I was bringing into my home to burn around my kids. I started digging deeper and deeper into information on candles, waxes, wicks, process, etc., (this is what I do - it is a gift and a curse to dig this much on all the things :)). And then it seemed to fall from the sky and land in my lap: a sustainably made products that make people feel goooood and make a home healthy!! Beeswax candles!!!! We were off and running. :)

The pottery is my love. The candles have turned out to be my husband's passion! Now he lies in bed at night reading candle forums and researching bees. I'm usually over in the corner throwing pots on the wheel or glazing votive plates. :) It is a wonderful, thrilling, scary, and wild life. We love and we are excited to see where it takes us.

We are set to break ground on our small home we will be building ourselves within the next few months (fingers crossed!) and we hope you check us out on Instagram @riversandroadsllc for updates on all the things!

Thanks so much for being here and trusting us with products you will use in your home, around your kids, pets, grandkids, friends, and loved ones.

🕯 Our 1/4” tips 😊

🐝 When burning our beeswax pillar candles, it is imperative the first time you light your candle to let the candle burn until the pool of melted wax forms a narrow collar around the perimeter of the candle, approximately 1/4”. This takes 2-4 hours depending on the size of the candle. This initial 1/4” collar burn ensures the candle will continue burning efficiently for the duration of its life.

🐝 Keep wick trimmed to 1/4” prior to each lighting to ensure proper, efficient, clean burns each time you light.

🐝 Keep candles away from drafts and vibrations. Never leave a candle unattended. Always keep candles out of the reach of children. Place pillar candles on pillar plates or a similar protective surface.

Sunlight and Bloom

🐝 Sunlight naturally lightens beeswax over time. You may notice your beeswax candle lightening to an ivory white if it sits in indirect, or especially direct sunlight.

🐝 Over time, beeswax releases its natural oils and pushes them to the surface of the candle. This process is called “bloom” and is a delightful, natural aging of the beeswax. These oils can be simply wiped away with a damp cloth or left alone to add character to your nature-made organic beeswax candle. ♥️
