"It’s Better to Light a Candle than to Curse the Darkness."

This quote is often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, Confucius, and even John F. Kennedy, but it dates back to the 19th century minister, William Watkinson. Whether or not Eleanor Roosevelt or John F. Kennedy said it first, or simply lived their lives by it, it's a good thought.

My journey into becoming a candlemaker started with inspiration from my strong and loving mother-in-law. My husband told me a story after she passed away a couple years ago. I always knew she was a lover of candles, and there was usually one lit on her coffee table when we would visit. After she passed away a couple years ago, my husband told me that she always said that it was impolite to have a candle on your coffee table that had never been lit. It had something to do with making the person visiting feel comfortable lighting it if they desired to, and if it had been lit before they would feel free to do so. I don't know if this is a Southern tradition, but if it is, it's one I was unaware of being born and raised in the South. Regardless, it lit a fire in me (pun intended), and kindled a desire (again, pun intended) to start making candles. That desire quickly grew into an business, and here I am, selling candles on Etsy made from renewable soybeans, braided cotton ribbon wicks, high quality fragrance oils and no dyes to take away from the natural beauty of the candle.

Riverside Candle Studio was born on the bank of the Cedar River in Charles City, Iowa. The name and logo were inspired by the river that runs in front of our home, and the swan that makes the river his (her?) home as well.

Whenever my mother-in-law used to walk into the kitchen when something was cooking, she would say "I smell good smells". I hope you find something here that makes you say that. If you do, I hope you love it as much as I loved pouring it for you! In the meantime, I will be working in my studio, with a candle lit nearby on my coffee table...
