The Leather Notebook Origins

There is something wonderful happening. People are putting pen to paper again. The sound of a pencil scratching out words brings memories of a more simple time, bringing memories to the surface. Remember as children, we would see a blank paper as a new adventure, whether it be pencil, pen, crayon or paint. A diary, a journal, anything your imagination could come up with began on paper.

Going back centuries, even thousands of years, man has put words down to record, tell a story, remember. Early Egyptian civilizations prized leather like gold. Leather was so prized it was used as currency by the ancient Romans. When man realized the importance of recording his thoughts and knowledge in books which he could carry during his daily travels.....this was an early form of the Travelers Notebook.

My initial interest in leather work began years ago when my brother made our mother an Indian Mask. A simple piece of soft deerskin became a piece that was aptly named Chief Pouty Face that gave her such pleasure for over 20 years. It now hangs in our entrance way.

When my brother crossed to the Other Side in 2010, I was given his leather working tools. For many years, I wanted to work with these tools for two reasons: to honor my brothers memory and to find that deep satisfaction he felt when bringing a project to life. I found that peace when I began making Traveler Notebooks

I was anxious to even consider opening a shop and jumping into the artisan world, as I have some physical issues that makes life challenging. While outside praying as to whether this was a good idea for me, I saw something that changed my life. In the clouds above the tree line, there appeared a vibrant Cross inside of a cloud. My first reaction was "No way." I started Road So Far Leather that very day.

While Cris and I make these notebooks, we strive to create a product that will strike a chord within you. As our products grow, we will continue to bring you the quality you have come to expect from us.
