About

Following my arrow.

I taught myself to knit when I was 20. My first project was a scarf. I was successful. Then I decided I was going to make socks!! How cool would that be! Never mind that I had never knit anything that wasn't a rectangle. I fell in love!! Not with socks them selves but the yarn. Wild crazy colors! I loved watching them pile on top of one another. I love watching stripes form. I would finish the first sock and be thrilled. The second sock was a different story. I was ready for something new. So I would start a new one with some exciting new yarn.

Not long after my one sock wonder days I discover spinning and from there dying. I enjoy spinning painted rovings. I watch the colors flow then blend and twist together in their rhythmic, sleepy way. It is the same when knitting a hand spun yarn from a painted roving.

When I am not up to my elbows in dye I you can find me giving riding lessons on Rocky Mountain Horses, taking hikes through the hills of Kentucky, or just hanging out with my husband Charlie, my daughter Ruby, our 10 chickens, 1 dog Hank, and our numerous cats!

Welcome to Rock and String Yarn. All yarn and roving are hand dyed my me. I can dye anywhere from 1-6 skeins of yarn or up to 2.5 pounds of fiber in one batch. This makes them available for larger projects or sets.

I use professional acid dyes in all my work.

Colorways

Most color ways will be assumed to be one of a kind. I do have a few that are very popular that I do repeat.

Custom dieing
Custom dying is available. Please note that my dyeing process is very whimsical and intuitive. Results are nearly impossible to recreate. I do keep a record of what colors I particularly like together but I cannot guarantee that one batch will exactly match the next. The same holds true to skeins of yarn. Even if they are dyed in the same batch the colors will be nearly identical but there is the possibility of slight variances between skeins. I suggest that when using any imdi dyed yarn that you alternate skeins while knitting. If you see something that you like but you need more than what is available or it has been sold just ask me about it. I will probably be able to re create it thought it may not be EXACTLY the same. So, If there is a sold item or you see yarn colors that you like but you would like those colors on roving or a different yarn convo me and I will do my best to accommodate your wishes. Feel free to request something completely of your own imagination also. Again, I can pretty much capture the essence of things (something like the sea with tan, light blue and dark blue, and a touch of pink, or greens with yellow and brown) but as was stated before my dying is very intuitive. It is not exact.

I can dye several items at a time but large batches are a challenge. I can dye up to 600g (usually 6 skeins) of yarn in a batch and I can dye up to 2.5 pounds of roving in a batch.

Payment for custom orders is expected up front. There will also be a 15% fee for all custom work. Custom orders can be expected to be processed within 2-3 weeks.

Custom Spinning
If you see a roving that you like I will be happy to spin it for you if you do not spin yourself. Please note that I will only spin my rovings. Please convo me and let me know how you want the yarn. Pricing is done by the yard so the finer the yarn the more the total cost. I charge $0.08 per yard. So a skein of yarn that is 300 yards will cost $24 for the spinning. This cost is for spinning only. The roving is bought separately. Here is an example of how it works. So if you want to make a scarf or smaller project, hat or socks and you want to use a roving that costs $15 and the spinning comes out to $24 the cost of the spinning plus the cost of the roving would come to a total of $39. (this is only an example, pricing for individual projects is dependent on the project) If you have questions about pricing convo me.
I can spin dyed rovings for large projects as well. I can easily dye enough roving in one batch to make a large sweater or even a small afghan. For projects this large I will work up an estimate of total cost for the finished project. Half the total estimated cost is due with your order. The remainder is due prior to the final shipment of finished yarn. Total time for yarn custom dye and spin jobs (depending on the size of the project) will be 6-8 weeks. I will happy to send the first few skeins of yarn so that you can get started 2-3 weeks after your order is placed.
