About

Start with the stone, the design will flow

Rocknwrap came about as a need to find a way to show off the beautiful cabochons (stones that are cut, domed and polished) that I was collecting and obsessing over. Mother Nature provides us with amazing colours and patterns in her stones.

Not content to just let these beauties sit on a display shelf, I taught myself to wire sculpt and then solder to create settings to wear these gorgeous stones out and about.

I also now do my own lapidary work as well, so many of my creations feature stones that I have cut and polished myself.

Check out my process post here http://rocknwrap.com/blog/from-start.html, starting with rough rock to completed shiny cabochon.

Larger items such as my cocktail rings are shipped out in a gift box in the postal category of 'Small Parcel'.

All orders above $100 will be sent registered as standard. This requires a signature upon delivery. If your order is below $100 and you would like it registered it will be an additional $3. Let me know if you require this option in 'Message to Seller' at Checkout and I will send you a revised paypal invoice.

You also have the option for Express Post at a total cost of $10. This option is also trackable. Let me know if you require this option in 'Message to Seller' at Checkout and I will send you a revised paypal invoice.

FAQ
What is gold-filled wire?

Those not familiar with art jewelry may not have come across the term gold-filled before as it is a material created specifically for wire art jewellers. Gold-filled is made by forming a tube of solid gold which is filled with a base metal, usually brass. It is an affordable quality alternative to solid gold as it wears and looks the same, and keeps the price of owning a unique handcrafted piece of jewelry manageable for most people.

Gold-filled items are very hard wearing and under normal conditions are considered lifetime products.

Gold-filled is not to be confused with 'gold-plated' - gold-plate is a microscopically thin layer of gold adhered by electroplating (or dipping) to any base metal. Items that have been gold-plated will quickly wear, peel, flake and tarnish. US Federal Trade Commision requires the minimum layer of karat gold in a gold-filled item to equal at least 1/20 the weight of the total item. This is 50 to 100 000 times thicker than regular gold plating which is not regulated.

How to Care for your Wire Wrapped Jewellery:

Wire wrapped jewellery may look delicate but it does not really require any more care than other fine jewelry - only that dictated by common sense and sensible handling.   Should you apply pressure and try hard enough, you can bend the wires but this doesn't occur under the duress of everyday wear. Basically you want to keep wire jewellery away from things that will snag and pull hard on the wires. For the most part, this simply means storing them in their box or pouch where they will not become tangled in the hooks or chains of other pieces of jewellery. Be careful when wearing with open weave clothing like scarves and sweaters - if they become entangled gently ease them apart.

Frequent cleaning is recommended to maintain the true beauty of your piece. Salt water, chlorine in swimming pools, soap and perspiration take their toll on all fine jewellery - wipe your jewellery carefully with a soft cloth after wearing to keep it clean and free of these elements which oxidise . To help slow tarnishing of sterling silver pieces, dry and seal in a ziplock bag before putting away for longer periods of time.

To clean and shine:

Cleaning wire wrapped jewellery takes a little more time due to the ornate nature of the wire work but it is a simple enough procedure!  Don’t use chemical jewelry cleaners as they may ruin certain gemstones or remove special finishes on the metal.  Simply use mild dish soap in warm water and a soft toothbrush to gently buff away surface tarnish and remove built up dirt and grime from all the nooks and crannies in the wire work. Try to avoid letting the brush come in contact with the stone - hard stones such as jaspers and agates will be fine but softer stones such as opals, ammonite, ammolite and pearls can be damaged by the bristles. Let dry completely.  Polish with a jewellery polishing cloth to remove remaining tarnish and restore bright shine.
