About rootpeople

Sales 208
On Etsy since 2017

Hi! My name is Lee and I'm creating The Field Guide to Root People.

I've been drawing ever since I could hold a crayon, which then became a pencil, which then became a paint brush. I attended college to earn three degrees in Graphic Design, Studio Arts, and Illustration. My entire adult life I have worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer.

In 2018, my love of watercolors, nature, and produce came together when I began painting portraits of Root People.
Root People are the vegetable-shaped faeries who live in gardens, fields, and kitchens all around us. The most well known member of their family is the Mandrake, but there are so many more. When I first meet them, they are shy, pretending to be the mundane version of the vegetable they resemble. After some coaxing, they show me their personalities, tell me their stories, and allow their portraits to be painted.

In 2019, I created The Pocket Field Guide to Root People, a short 48-page book which tells readers where to find 13 kinds of Root People, a bit about their personalities, and their roles in their garden societies. These scientific-style illustrations, printed on watercolor paper or bound in saddlestitch books, have traveled various fairs and conventions across the coast to brighten patrons' days.

Throughout 2020, I'll be illustrating and writing the completed, half journal/half guidebook style Field Guide to Root People. I'll also be creating new full-scene illustrations, humorous pin-up designs, and new products like magnets, stickers, and bags. Root People bring joy, humor, and fun to my life, and I hope they can do the same for you!

Love,
Lee Dawn
