Announcement   Welcome to 1000 Colors one-of-a-kind garments. My patchwork skirts come out of a love I developed for them in the 70's. All patchworks are made from 100% carefully selected cotton fabrics. I am like a kid in a candy store every time I get to shop for new cottons.

Besides working with cotton I occasionally get back into working with silk. Found in many cultures, Shibori is an ancient method of tying, binding, and folding fabric to create beautiful designs. I hand make each silk garment, create Shibori patterns with my husband, and dye the fabric. We hope you enjoy them as much as we love creating them!

All garments are made in our smoke free, pet free home by hand.

Early in 2015 we took a devastating blow to our family with the untimely loss of our 31 year old son, Jagger, who was a passenger in an automobile traveling with a dear friend to a much deserved ski trip. There are no words, other than love, for this kind of loss, only a lifetime of adjusting and healing for the broken heart. May we all find love and healing as we move through this world.

Thank you for stepping into 1000 Colors.

Such a beautiful skirt, crafted with love. It's amazingly swishy and swirly and so beautifully made. This is my second skirt from Hazel and I have just bought two more.

About

A few skirts, lots of admirers and we were off

While working as a graphic designer for a major book distributor, my brother-in-law became very ill and passed away. The loss of this man, who felt more like a brother to me, taught me much about life and living. I proceeded to pay off our debt and in a year I quit my long time position with Ingram Book Company.

I wandered round the house for a month, sipping tea and looking out the windows at our restored backyard habitat, watching the birds and thinking.

My husband attended a natural dye workshop the previous year and was already creating shibori patterns on silk scarves. In the meantime we traveled to the beloved Berkeley West Coast Dance Camp and on the way back home to Tennessee we were chit chatting about what we could do besides silk scarves. The thought of making three tier skirts was thrown around as well as dresses and harem pants.

Before I could commit to this new work, I had to have the blessing of a dear friend in California, who made her living by making belly dance skirts and adornments, which she sells online. I did not want to step into her market without her approval. She thought it was a wonderful idea and has given us much business advice along the way.

Thus we began our journey with Roundabout Dancewear. My husband, David, taught me the dyeing process as well as many shibori binding techniques. We work together when we can. David continues with his full-time job, being a Physical Therapist Assistant and I catch him on the weekends to help me with some bindings or dyeing.

It did not take too long to realize that many non-dancers were interested in our work as well. We changed our name to 1000 Colors and continued on.

We found each other in 1990 and have been inseparable ever since. Both artistic by nature, if not working with fabric, shibori, or dyeing, you will find us drawing, or creating beautifully illustrated pages in large tome's. We seem to always be creating, whether we are in the kitchen with our hands in a pot of dye or watching TV while drawing.

Former graphic designer for ever so long, I now get to taste the honey of life by playing with fabrics to create the pieces I sell in my shop. Looking into the outside world I am inspired daily to work some magic with fabrics.
