Dress is absolutely stunning, from the cut to the color. Comfortable fabric, silky with a teeny bit of stretch. My only qualm was that the dress was mailed in a yellow envelope instead of a flat box. Would have preferred the option to pay extra for a large box!

About

Falling into a Dream

From designer + owner Rebecca Schoneveld Cheek:

I grew up in a big, creative, kinda-crazy-but-totally-loving family. Us kids were home schooled by our mom, who considered sewing and crafting to be important parts of our academic program. A natural-born fashionista, I begged my mom to teach me to sew long before she felt comfortable allowing me to operate machinery.

So it only made sense to study fashion design in college, which I did at NYC's Fashion Institute of Technology. I always loved evening and bridal gowns- that was what drew me to study fashion in the first place! But practicality and job availability lead me into 10+ years of working in the garment industry making more "normal" clothes... actually mostly contemporary dresses and separates, with a few stints of designing literally Walmart clothes (*yawn*).

A word about that time-

For being an industry that's all about making people "pretty", the fashion industry sure can leave a girl with some not-so-pretty stories. I've worked for companies big and small, well known and not. I've run my own business (a maternity line, which I managed to get into Nordstrom, Saks, and 100+ more) and worked on several startup projects. Every so often, I would think maybe I had just had enough! Enough screaming at factory owners, enough battling the overflowing marketplace, enough feeling like I was just adding fuel to a very off-balance, wasteful fire.

In 2010, after yet another new startup project fell apart, I decided that was it! I started seriously researching schools and applying to study (of all things?) Chinese Medicine. THEN, the unpredictable happened:

First, my apartment building suffered a horrible fire, leaving me and my husband and 2 kitties homeless.

Then, two weeks later we found out *surprise!* that we were pregnant!

It was time to go back to square one. After the morning sickness lifted and we were able to move back home, I took a long hard look at what I had to work with. Boxes of silks, left over from one of my lines, a very small amount of cash, a patient husband and a bit of work space carved out of our apartment. A lot of knowledge about and, yes, still passion for dresses. So I gathered up some strength, bought a print from an Etsy seller that says "DO WHAT YOU LOVE" which I promptly pinned to my wall and took to heart. I created a few new pieces and gathered some old favorites, photographed them simply and, finally, posted them on Etsy.
My husband joked, 3 hours after I had posted my first items, "so how long 'til your first order comes?" Then, right on cue, I got a notification that one of my dresses had just sold! I couldn't believe it, I was elated.

Over the next few months, as my belly grew bigger, so did my understanding of what women liked about my work and what they wanted to see more of. I kept getting requests for my party dresses to be made "long and ivory" so I gladly followed the hints and started designing more and more wedding gowns. Quite often, a custom-designed gown would turn out so beautifully that I would add it to the options in the shop, and so we've grown! Organically, patiently, lovingly.

About a year ago, I had a request for a super-super rushed wedding dress from a bride who had a disaster occur with her original gown. She ordered from me on Monday and was getting married that Saturday! I called in my uber-talented mom to help me get the job done. That experience turned out so well that from then on she has worked with me to create a large portion of our orders.

Now, just almost 2 years into it (including a little time off after my son was born), we've dressed well over 150 brides and lots of party-goers. I've recently put together the first taste of a new collection that allows brides to design their own dress from existing elements. This is something I've dreamed of for a long time and you should expect to see more of from me! I also have plans to expand the party dress aspect of the line, and to work with my mom to create a line of dresses (and her own shop) that cater to women her age.

Through this shop, a great sense of joy has been seeded and keeps on growing. I feel SO lucky to get to work with my mom and sister, with gorgeous fabrics and trims, and perhaps most of all, with all sorts of really amazing women - my clients! - who I would never have gotten to meet otherwise! I really can't say how special it feels to be a part of someone's wedding in such a significant way.

On top of everything, knowing that I am employing local artisans, living an independent lifestyle, practicing patience and love every step of the way, and creating pieces that I am honestly proud of, I can really say when you "DO WHAT YOU LOVE" and put real love into what you do, you actually have a chance to spread love and joy to those around you. And that, quite honestly, is the best kind of success I could ever ask for!

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to read through my Policies and Procedures.

All of the styles sold through my store are cut to order and are hand sewn in Brooklyn, New York. The piece you receive was made especially for you.

If you live in the New York area, we are more than happy to meet with you in my Brooklyn boutique, Schone Bride, to try on samples, review fabric options, colors, and take measurements in person.

ORDERING FROM THE COLLECTION

Many of our styles can be made in your choice of color! Dresses are made in standard sizes and alterations for a custom fit are always to be expected. Customizations to existing styles may be possible (for example, adding a sleeve, changing hem lengths, switching a skirt from one style onto the bodice of another, etc). In some cases, additional fees for patternmaking, fabric, and labor may apply ($100 and up).

Please review our size chart carefully to select your size, and always choose the size that fits your largest measurement as it is much easier to take in than to let out. If possible, also send us your actual measurements so we can double check that the size selected works best for you. If you need help with measurements or selecting your size, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Cut-to-order pieces made from existing styles take approximately 16 weeks from payment date to ship date, although they can be rushed if necessary. You should also allow 6-8 weeks for your alterations. Please convo me before placing your order if you need a rush and I will let you know in advance if I can meet your deadline. A rush fee of $150-$450 may apply, depending on the style.

TO SELECT YOUR SIZE
1) Measure at the widest point of BUST, narrowest point of WAIST (where your torso bends from side to side), and widest point of HIPS (9” below waist). It is generally best to have someone else take your measurements for best accuracy.
Breathe normally and make sure that the measuring tape is horizontal!
2) Indicate your height AND your measurement from natural waist to floor (in shoes you plan to wear)
3) Please note any special requirements or concerns please contact us. If you are over a size C cup, are pregnant, very petite etc we can offer you certain customization options at an additional charge.

DETAILED "HOW TO MEASURE" GUIDE FOR CUSTOM PIECES
Some styles and orders will require more in depth measurements (I will let you know if I need them). In those cases, please follow the below guidelines to acquire your measurements:
***PLEASE NOTE*** IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE SOMEONE ELSE MEASURE YOU FOR BEST ACCURACY. It is important that you get measured while wearing the same foundation garments (Spanx if needed) that you plan to wear with your dress! Control top pantyhose, padded bras, etc, will all affect the fit of the garment.

A) WAIST- Place your hands on your natural waist- this is the point where if your torso bends when you bend side to side. Note this measurement.
B) BUST- Measure at widest point of bust, and be sure your measuring tape is parallel to the ground (don't let it dip to the back!). Drop your arms to your sides and breathe normally.
C) UNDER BUST- Essentially your rib cage measurement, right below your bust
D) HIPS- Measure at the widest point, generally about 9" below your WAIST.
E) WAIST TO FLOOR- **WITH THE SHOE HEIGHT YOU PLAN TO WEAR** (This is only important with floor length dresses)
(F) UPPER ARM- Circumference of your arm, 1" below your armpit
