A French Addiction
Sausalito, California artist Suze Perry-Hinkle has indulged her French addiction for years, masterminding flights of fancy yielding breathtaking French miniature buildings. The Hotel Vendome (shown here), was featured on the cover of "Dolls House and Miniature Magazine" (UK), which often highlights her work. Her next project, Le Chateau Bidaine, is a miniature replica of a French chateau which was featured twice on magazine covers, "American Miniaturist" in March 2013, and the UK's Dolls House World in March 2014.
The first "coloring storybooks" in the "Dollhouse Dogs" series feature Cavalier King Charles spaniels in the miniature Chateau Bidaine. These are titled "Follymops and the French Chateau". The first book in the next series is "Prelude to Paris", a "Tail of Two Dogs" who meet, fall in love and get married in Northern California. In subsequent books they will have adventures as they honeymoon at the Hotel Vendome in Paris. This series features Australian cattle dogs. Each book is published in 3 editions, a black and white version, a color version, and a bilingual French/English version.
The visitor to RuedeSuze.com can promenade down an imaginary cobblestone street in an old French town, with whimsical stores fashioned in painstaking detail. Here you can see many of Suze's miniature buildings built over the last decade.
Her apprenticeship as a faux finisher led to a passion for the patina of age. “I try for realism, a lived in quality. I do not do ‘pretty’ or ‘cute’, those qualities are for others. I aim for realism, where one would find dirt and grit. I am most interested in displaying the signs of decay over time, referring to myself happily as the ‘Queen of Distress’."
The Eiffel Tower Project began when, taking a break from constructing buildings, Suze decided to decorate over fifty 11" high Eiffel Tower balsa wood bird feeders in various themes. They premiered at an exhibition in Marin County, California on Leap Day 2012. Only a few of them are left, and they are listed for sale here on Etsy.
Rue de Suze art and gift items are for sale here on Etsy. The coloring storybooks are available on Amazon (search keyword "Follymops"), or your local bookstore can order them through their wholesale catalogue.
Suze is a passionate lover of everything French. She is the artistic mastermind behind these pieces. Her French architectural miniature scale buildings can be enjoyed in detail on the Rue De Suze facebook page, or at RuedeSuze.com.
