About

Tiny faces in Tuscan Marble

I am featured here:
http://www.joomag.com/magazine/mag/0724586001453738210
This is the beautiful article written about me by Laura Slivinski:
"Sabina Botti grew up imagining tiny creatures to populate the wooden countryside around her home in Northern Italy.
She wrote stories and poems and illustrated them with fantasy beings.
It's no surprise that she went to art school.
After graduating from the Parma Art Institute, in addition to working as a painter, she became a professional restorer of fresco paintings. The restoration of frescoes is delicate work, often done on priceless historic treasures.
Such intricate processes require tiny sable paint brushes and tools more common on hospitals.
Sabi has thin blades for cleaning, and syringes to inject natural gelatin and glue to repair cracks.
Sabina,s work takes her into ancient castles, churches and abbeys. Working in such places, and so intimately, with centuries-old works of art, is inspiring to someone like Sabina.
She has the imagination of the great painters of history and tries to recreate the same atmospheric magic in her own artwork.
We were first attracted to her painted stones.
She collects them on outings with her husband and young son, smooth, oval and polished, from beaches around the region of Tuscany.
Sabina uses marbles, the famous white and blue-grey marble from the mountains there. Carrara marble has been a world-renowned and coveted medium since the time of the Ancient Rome. The Pantheon is constructed from it, and many of the statues of the renaissance were carved from it.
She chooses marble for her fantasy stones because of the way it absorb color.
It is an ideal base on which to paint. The photographs on Etsy don't immediately reveal the size of Sabina's painted stones.
Some ar less than an inch long.
Because the fairy-like images she paints on such small stones are detailed and intricate, Sabina uses the same type of thin sable brushes that she uses in her restoration work.
In browsing through the Etsy gallery of her fairy stones, we were delighted to discover that sabina also does oil and acrylic paintings on paper and canvas.
We think her Florentia is reminiscent of Picasso, and Anna is like a cave painting, dramatic and intense with a minimalist touch.
Even more striking, and more impressive considering their size, are Sabina's enchanted forest shadow boxes.
She builds three- dimensional woodland scenes of layered white paper cut-outs, in small vintage metal compartments.
For this precision cutting, Sabina uses the same super-sharp surgical blades that she uses in her restoration work.
She must have very good eyesight, and an extremely steady hand."
