A passion for bookbinding, an old schoolhouse, great music, and a promise.

I came to binding later in life, after a career as a linguist and teacher in years gone by. The all manual techniques that I use are honest, tactile, and cannot be rushed. That has forced me to slow the creative process and appreciate the beautiful tools, materials, mechanics, skills and ideas that flow in the quiet spaces of time.

Nearly six years ago, we bought an old schoolhouse. Though it was significant to it's rural community, a lovely example of timber frame federation public buildings, and in terrific shape, it wasn't heritage protected. We could have bought land anywhere, but this was a chance to save and restore a piece of history, to settle into and contribute to a village environment, and be able to work from home with a productive garden and orchard to keep us grounded and honest. The schoolhouse has being repaired so all my old bindery buddies (Herc the guillotine, Nipper the table press and Derek the standing press) can feel at home. You can see a panorama picture of them all on my shop banner.

I like all kinds of music in the bindery - Handel, Beethoven, Miles Davis, ACDC, Count Basey, Fleetwood Mac, Vince Jones, James Taylor, and more recently, Adele and Lior. I'm not sure if the music on the day influences the binding, or the other way around.

I made this promise many years ago to my Gran to further the bookbinding skills my late uncle crafted so beautifully, and explore the family gifts that my Gran saw in me. As often happens, life got in the way, but finally I took the plunge and began to craft books by hand. Bless her, she was right.

So, why the name 'Sago on Tuesdays"?

You can read all about that story on my blog. I hope you will venture there and enjoy it.

~Thanks, and my best to you~

In a lovely village, in a schoolhouse with history, I work in my traditional trade, making and repairing beautiful books that last. I also supply tools of my trade and bookbinding staples, and do a little joyful destashing from time to time. Enjoy

My trade uses low-tech, low-emission skills, my packaging is low-waste and my bindings are made to last and be repaired not replaced. I dedicate myself to this rare trade, and in return, it teaches me to pay attention to life, and to realise it's honest rewards..

ETSY IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN: If you are unhappy in any way with the purchased item you have received, please convo me within 3 days of receiving it, and we can arrange return of the item and a refund (ex. shipping) of the item cost. Any refunds will be made via Paypal refund transfer, or Etsy direct refund, whichever way was used to pay. Custom orders are not refundable, owing to the fact it has been made exclusively for you.
RESERVED ITEMS: If you have requested an item be reserved, it is done so happliy for 3 days unless otherwise arranged with me. After that, I will return it to its normal section in the shop. Of course, communication is the key. I'm always happy to make other arrangements so long as you keep in touch. : )
MULTIPLE ITEMS POLICY: I refund shipping overages, or can include additional product, if you prefer. I will make contact to offer and arrange if applicable .

In Australia: I send parcels generally by letter for small flat things or pre-paid satchel for large things, which usually take about 6-8 days, as it goes via our village to the Ballarat post office. All items include tracking. If you would like other options, like insurance, express or registered post, please contact me for a price.

For international shipping, I use regular mail without express or tracking (these cost $20-40 extra - crazy), as it is the most cost effective for you. Tracking is not actually available for parcels smaller than 250g. Not sure why but there you have it. For items sent by letter, especially if it contains metal (eg. sewing needles), and especially to the USA, security is strict at both ends and takes time. Two or three weeks is not uncommon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am very careful to take utmost care and transparency when sending items, and I communicate with customers conscientiously and use tracking numbers wherever possible. I shall not however be responsible beyond that for non-receipt of items. It is unfortunate, but some etsy players who have seen to profit from falsely claiming non-delivery make honest artists and sellers less generous and more cautious. If you are in any doubt about your postal service, then I urge you to arrange registered postage as I do when making online purchases.

Given the custom materials, additional time and personal nature of these orders, there is a $20 non-refundable deposit which you make at the initial ordering stage, with the balance payable when your item is listed as completed and reserved.

Enjoy browsing. I hope I have something here for you.
