About

A Creative Awakening To Add Flavor

Even from a very early age, I remember having a desire to create. As a child I rarely played with Barbies or cared too much of princess things. But instead I could usually be found drawing, writing stories or creating a fort in one of the pockets in our home. I recently came across a first grade paper I filled out of what my dream vocation was and I had drawn myself sitting at an easel and picked ‘cartoonist’. I also developed a strong appreciation of old and vintage items. There was both a Salvation Army thrift store and an antique mall very close to my home growing up and at the time I could not pinpoint what the draw for me was, but I knew that the experience of being in a place filled with uncovered potential would be something I would never tire.

Despite having a strong desire to create, I went to college to get a degree in nutrition as I also have a strong passion for the learning about the body and all of its incredible capabilities. By the time I was graduated and started having our babies, I started having a re-awakening of my creativity but having three children in short succession forced my time and energy to become very limited. I had many ideas of how I wanted our little house to look and feel and became exuberant about decorating the kids rooms’ to match their personalities. Life became more difficult and with some job changes and finally outgrowing our 1,000 sq. feet it was time for a move and at that time I felt that I had just barely scratched the surface of my inspiration.

The name Salt of the Earth Decor is inspired by a verse in Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is not longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” As a Christian, this verse has a profound meaning as to how I want to live my life, but it also has a practical meaning. In Biblical times salt was used for preservation and of course for flavoring of food. Jesus was talking about each person being like salt to enhance and give meaning to this existence, but I also like to think of this also in terms of the vintage treasures I find or the items I create. I want each item to give some “flavoring” to your home; enhancing your space to reflect love and joy. I want to preserve the past by snatching up the vintage treasures before they are gone forever. I think that is one of the reasons, even way back when I was young, that I enjoyed thrift stores and antique malls so thoroughly; keeping these items from the past, preserving them, creates an incredible feeling of nostalgia and simpler times. With certain pieces, it is hard to ignore their ingenuity, their story, the care taken to make or produce them and its something that I want to preserve.

Being more settled in our new home and in a bit more manageable life-stage, my creativity has been set free. I love being a mom so dearly and I feel like I owe a lot of inspiration from our kids and my husband, but I know my soul is crying out to make and do great things with what I make. So in the basement of our new house (we didn’t have that before, as my “craft room” ended up in our bedroom), I’ve set up a workspace to create between nap-times and early mornings. Time-management is still difficult with our little ones and busy schedules, but with all that comes a desire deep within to give more meaning to my existence here. My hope is that with every piece we find or make we will be able to share the love and joy our family has with you and your family and friends.
