About

Knit & Crochet ~ Now & Then

My grandmothers had strong influence upon me. Both emigrated to the U.S. in the 1880’s, neither was formally educated, however, in America, they each kept an elegant home, raised up well mannered and well educated children, exerted great significance in their community and left a legacy that I want to pass along to my children and grandchildren.
I learned to knit, crochet, sew, and cook at their knees. All my aunts (the children of my grandmothers), as children, learned to crochet yards and yards of lace strips which were used to trim all the household linens and even some clothing. Every pillowcase and sheet, every towel (both kitchen and bath), every napkin and tablecloth had a handmade lace hem. Petticoats, nightgowns, pinafores, collars and cuffs were also lace trimmed. Even though a nightgown or pillowcase may have been created from a reused flour or seed sack, it was elevated for Nonna’s home by having a lace edge.
Often I am fortunate enough to find snippets of this treasure at estate sales, household sales and thrift shops. I honor it because of my respect for its history and my desire to preserve it.
In my shop you’ll find items that include this heirloom lace that was handmade by a Victorian, Belle Epoque, WW I or WW II woman. I re-imagine their exquisite needlework to create heirloom wedding and bridal accessories.

It's genetic: I knit and or crochet. I inherited their genetic code. Want something knitted up exclusively for you? press the CONTACT SELLER button on my etsy front page to discuss your request.

I'm building a mail list for my newsletter. It'll be published quarterly to let you know of special sales and discounts and new products. Please sign up by emailing me your permission: knitgirl2009 [!at] hotmail.com

Reused vintage lace may have a microscopic flaw. It's part of the beauty of "vintage". This is why it is so endearing♥
