About

Brush to Bead

My name is Sandra and I am the artist and designer behind the brush of Painted By Hand. Thank you for taking an interest in my shop and beads. I work in a small Victorian home studio in Santa Cruz, CA where I also paint in pastel and watercolor.

My love affair with beads started when I was about five. My aunt had exquisite glass beaded doorways in her house. I was completely enchanted. I have had a paint brush in my hands since my early teens when I first started painting in oils and watercolor.

I had the idea to put brush to bead in in my twenties while working in a used book shop. I came upon a really cool book of thimble paintings. My love for beads and my love for art really came together for me then.

Each bead is painted with porcupine quills and hand cut miniature brushes using permanent acrylic paint and inks. The beads are then hand dipped into an epoxy resin creating a clear, glass like surface and making the beads versatile, tough and wearable. Grommets are applied to the holes for an attractive finish.

Each bead is an original canvas weaving together rich color, design and intention. I draw from the designs and artworks from around the world that inspire me. I like to imagine that each bead, each little painting goes out into the world on its own journey, telling its own story, bringing its energy to those who would wear or work with the beads.

Welcome! Everything I make, each bead, each piece of jewelry, every painting - I make from a place of gratefulness and love. One of the most special things about handmade objects is the intention that the maker puts in to each piece. I am very aware of that intention and each piece I make carries with it a blessing from my heart, to yours. Thank you~

Additional policies and FAQs
Care of my beads – my beads are very tough. They repel water but not waterproof. Please do not soak the beads. The coating I use does not scratch or dent easily and self-heals from most dents.

Grommets - I will remove the grommets on the beads or change the type of metal used upon request.

Custom orders - I gladly accept custom orders though be aware the painting and dipping cycle is long and is done in large batches so I cannot take custom orders at this time for less that US $150.00. Contact me through, if I am coming up to another dip I might be able to include your item; it is often a matter of timing. Please see my custom order page for more information.

All of my pieces are one of a kind and I cannot duplicate any piece. When it is sold, that is the only one there is.

If you have any questions, just let me know. I always enjoy hearing from you!
Thank you for helping make the online transaction a smooth and happy one!
