Settling Down to Make Some Pots
After getting a degree in painting, I went off to paint and teach art abroad for more than twenty years. When you teach art at smaller schools, you end up teaching EVERYTHING, so I learned ceramics with my students and in Summer classes, and ended up running a big clay studio. I loved it, so when we came to Sarasota two years ago, I set up a studio and worked on designing and making functional ware. I learn something new every day and it has been wonderful to really focus on clay and all aspects of the production. I miss having a bunch of kids around, but it is nice to not fish drowned projects out of glaze buckets and chisel pots off kiln shelves every day. It has been an exciting journey with inspiration for beautiful and functional pottery all along! While the chemistry of glazes is my biggest struggle, I love playing with form and function. While I can make you a set of everything you see in the shop, I enjoy making one of a kind pieces, and thinking of fresh shapes and designs.
The best thing about making pottery is trying to create beautiful objects that make people slow down and enjoy them with every use.
In the video below, you can see me throwing a bottle shape and then blowing in it, to expand the walls and give the bottle more volume!
