My Life in Clay

It was May 2015 and I was in the process of preparing to stock my new Etsy shop. Originally, in 2009, I opened under the name of fallingbranch to sell prints by my daughter, Ashley, and my partner, Harold, in addition to my ceramic ornaments. The shop went on vacation in 2010 when local shows kept me so busy, it was all I could handle. In the past two years my work was featured in American Craft magazine, and a segment about me was aired on PBS stations across the country. This year I made the leap to full time clay artist. In August 2015, Art Doll Quarterly magazine featured my work, all of which got me thinking…. Wouldn't this be a great time to open a new Etsy shop and introduce my "Wallies" —and some of the other fun stuff I've been doing— to a broader audience? And it was! Etsy is the perfect way to reach people all over the world. I'm enjoying being part of the Etsy community.

I make human and animal figures with a bit of humor. I grew up in the SF Bay Area where the Funk Movement no doubt rubbed off on me. In 2006 I moved to Oregon where I enjoy a large studio in the tall trees and offer classes and workshops.

Production partners

  • Ashley Coleman

    Portland, OR

Ashley is my daughter and she makes her own work. I love it when we work side by side in the studio.

  • Maria

    Portland, OR

Maria is a very supportive collaborator and friend who starts my Wallies by building a basic body in clay according to my specifications. When she delivers them the clay is still malleable. I take it from there, forming it further and adding features. I sure appreciate Maria and her support!
