Announcement   Sardine Clothing Company started in 2008 with one woman and a sewing machine making kids clothing from thrift store finds. After a few years, it is still one woman (and friends!) and A LOT of sewing machines making fun "everyday favorite" skirts and accessories from even more thrift store finds.

I am Maryanne Petrus Gilbert, and I am a little fishy. I believe in reusing anything you can and my little part is repurposing the lowly t-shirt. We all love them, we all have a drawer full of them, and every now and then we take a bag full to the local thrift store.  I happen to love them, I love shuffling through the racks at my Salvation Army to look at them, I love to bring them home, cut them up and make a great skirt that you will love even more than the original T shirt you donated. With any luck, you will find it again in my booth at a show, or on Etsy, or in a store and you can have a moment or another few years together. ENJOY!

This skirt is very different from the other I ordered. It is quite a bit shorter and falls slightly oddly. The other skirt is awesome though.

I'm very sorry you are not as pleased with your 2nd skirt, they are all cut from the same pattern and are all hand hemmed and should be consistently within 21 inches give or take a quarter inch. We will happily exchange it for another.

NOTE: posted the 3 star review about the hummingbird skirt being different in length, but I was totally wrong. I tried it on and it was rolled over on top. Both skirts are top notch!!! And the seller is very attentive.

About

Saving the world one t shirt at a time!

I started Sardine like most great thing, completely by accident. I had recently been widowed with 2 young kids and a teenager to care for. I was making pants for my youngest out of T shirts when one day I decided to make a skirt out of the remaining scraps. I wore my skirt on my morning "therapy" walk with my sister and kept getting stopped and questioned about it.
I made a few more. In an effort to keep myself from thinking about the life i was throw into
I Just Kept Sewing.

Soon there was a large pile of skirts. I needed to do something with them so I gave them to friends.

They were stopped, they were questioned.

I did some research, thinking I was the first person to do this I was feeling quite impressed with myself. Google is the ugly honest sister you need but knows everything....I was in fact among many, many people doing very similar things. Undaunted, I continued to make my Skirts. I decided I would just make them different than everyone else. My skirts still are made from the first pattern I designed. I added a pocket, I made the cut and flair perfectly flattering for a size 0 to a 2x. I created my signature knee length skirt and began to appliqué my drawing on them.

To this day and forever more, I personally draw every appliqué with the machine. this is something I won't change. I love that every single poppy, bird, lobstah! and creature I draw is a reflection of me and my mood that day.

Since starting all this in 2008 I have grown in more ways than I would have thought possible. My studio began in a small cramped room in my house, a restored 1880 wool mill and now resides below my "home" in a lovely space that houses 12+ sewing machines and my retail store. I have a few "minnows" that help out part-time with the assembling of the skirts. I no longer need to sew to occupy my mind, I sew because I love what I make.

I sell at many shows across the east coast and travel with my awesome daughter. She is a perfect companion and knows the skirts as if she made them herself.

I hope you enjoy my stuff as much as I do and that you get a lifetime of wear out of it!

I love to make things up. I wake every morning excited to create new things. My goal with Sardine is to my an impact by recycling discarded unwanted clothing, Keeping it out of landfills and extending it's life as much as possible.

  • Dana

    Assistant, Minnow

Dana was one of my first "Minnows". Wanting to learn to sew she came to me for lessons. Unable to spare time to teach her I began teaching her how to sew by helping me. She works once a week after her day job to sew with her pups Pickle and Marley.

  • Rachel

    Assistant, Minnow

Rachel is the other first "minnow". She also wanted to learn to sew and began with Dana. Rachel helps assemble, organize and graphic design. If your package arrived stuffed with a card and swedish fish, you can thank Rachel!

  • Leanne

    Assistant, Minnow

Leanne is a phenomenal cutter. After I return and wash all the clothing, Leanne make quick work of disassembling it for me to use. She is the Edward Scissorhands of the studio, we would be lost without her!

  • Tuna

    Shop Keeper

Tuna joined our team in 2013. She keeps me company day in and out and inspects absolutely nothing. She does however test the fabric scraps for softness and durability and chases away all secret stealing squirrels. You just can't trust squirrels.

Thanks for visiting my shop. Everything item is created using up cycled clothing, Some items can be replicated, but most items are completely unique and connot be repeated. Therefore, I can resize any skirt to fit you.
I hand pick every one of my t shirts, each shirt is thoroughly washed and hung to dry before it is cut for skirts. I try my best to choose only quality shirts with no imperfections, but sometimes I will love a graphic more than I dislike a small flaw and it will get used. I try to add any such variations in the item description.
Some vintage shirts are thin and I will back them with a similar color to thicken the shirt.
