All I Need is an Old Wooden Door
Three years ago, while on family camping trip in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I met the love of my life. I was wet, dirty, and stinky after a rainy weekend in a tent when a park ranger entered the picture. Somehow I convinced him to take an out-of-town, city-girl on a date. We married a year later.
I moved to his hometown of Grand Marais, MI, a small town set on Lake Superior with a population of about 200 people. With a single gas station (which doubles as the town's coffee shop), a locally owned convenient store, and four seasonally-opened restaurants I quickly discovered that finding work would be difficult. That's when it occurred to me that I was being blessed with the opportunity to make my dreams of pursuing art come true.
As a child, my parents "built" me an art desk by placing a door on top of two saw horses. This was my favorite place to be. It was stocked with everything a child would want: crayons, glue, markers, glitter, construction paper, scissors, the whole nine yards. Not surprisingly, when as an adult, I moved into my own home, the first thing I did was "build" myself an art desk using an old wooden door. I've matured some with the supplies I keep on hand, but the same feelings of total bliss still come over me at my art desk.
In Grand Marais (my new small town home), my art desk looks out over mighty Lake Superior. I spend hours fiddling away on projects, getting lost and inspired all over again by the beauty of the north country. I am so blessed to be able work from home, with the man I love, in a peaceful, pristine setting.
Sari Jane's has evolved over the years, as my interests and inspirations grow and change. I "dabble" in a wide-variety of media including photography, painting, 3D assemblage, bead work, knitting, and more. As an artist, I think it is only natural to experiment with different mediums. It helps me to take a vague concept and transform it into something concrete.
My passion, however, is in graphic design. The satisfaction I get from transferring my imaginations onto a computer screen is still unreal to me. I love watching my "day dreams" come to life. What makes graphic design so special, is that I can make custom pieces for others to enjoy as well. I like the fluid process of getting feedback from my customers and having the ability to tweak colors, fonts, or sizes to make their day dreams come true.
Ever since I was a little girl I always felt the happiest when I was making something. That passion for creating art has evolved over the years, and I'm so thankful to share my joy with others.
