Unorthodox as I am in my shopping choices, I was so glad the young airline pilot mom of the baby for whom I selected this gift really liked it! It's the right coil or scheme, a teachable item, this Constellation Orion. Mom Lisa so appercciates local talented artists such as Sashira. And it was a hit at the baby shower, too!

Mom and Dad reported that little Liam loves his original art piece 1 year old baby gift! The bold pat tend and strong colours spoke to me as a suitable gift to developing a bright young mind.

About

Happy Chaotic Order, a brightly planned haphazardness

I'm Sashira Gafic, an artist and former junior high art teacher living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I work primarily with watercolours, pen and ink, and acrylics. Much of my work is inspired by the organic world that surrounds me, but pattern and repetition always shine through. Most of what I make comes from my desire for a chaotic order, a planned haphazardness.

I've been making art for as long as I can remember and have now come to a point in my life where I am ready to make it for others in a purposeful way. I used to use art only as a relaxation tool, a minor hobby, a conversation piece. I'm not out to make a big statement or change the world, but I want to share what I make, because it makes me happy; I like pretty pictures.

My work is mainly lighthearted, bright fun, with a bit of nostalgia for my childhood. In my shop you can find original paintings and drawings, as well as a few cards and prints. I'm also a member of WEST, the Winnipeg Etsy Street Team. Go check them out!

You'll notice that citrus fruits are a common subject in my artwork. Every since my early twenties, when I was introduced to the poetry of Octavio Paz, specifically "A Boy and a Girl," I have been painting and drawing citrus fruits. Citrus slices are like nature's mandalas. They give me peace while I draw them and bring me joy whenever I use them in my artwork. Speaking of mandalas, they have always been on my radar, however it wasn't until about 5 years ago that I started to draw them for therapeutic purposes and subsequently used them in my artwork.

Trees are also a favourite subject of mine. Growing up in Manitoba, I would often have the opportunity to go camping in the Whiteshell or invited to a cottage. This painting is inspired by those happy moments and beautiful memories. I often use iridescent and metallic paints that give my pieces a shimmer that changes as the light moves through the day, just like real trees.

Some of my more geometric images may have caught your eye. My father is from Bosnia, and growing up, our home was filled with beautiful handmade carpets from his home town of Sarajevo. Growing up in an environment filled with the glorious textures and patterns of the Balkans has made its mark on my creative mind. I'm always drawn to carpets and kilims, not just from Bosnia, but from all over the world. The geometric designs have influenced my love for imperfect symmetry.

Thanks so much for taking a look!
