I create unique artwork ranging from the sublime to the ridiculously absurd, often with a twist, but always a feast for the eyes.
I grew up in the wilds of Cornwall, where without a television, I was read stories to by my father, an author. Without a doubt, this was the starting point when my imagination leapt into gear. Books including those by C.S Lewis, Roald Dahl, Oscar Wilde, Edward Leah & the book 'Strewel Peter' (banned for many years). From this point, the images conjured up in my imagination were forever indented in my mind.
In my late teens, I moved to Andalucia where I was blown away by the exquisite Moorish architecture, bull fighting arena's, the ceramic tiles and the intense shadows created by the harsh sun. This has been an inspiration for my later painting/collages, where all these elements are in evidence. Whilst in Spain, I expanded my reading, intrigued by the 'gitano' customs & folklore.
I was privileged enough to obtain a place at the 'University of Brighton' to study a BA hons in Illustration where I had some incredibly inspiring tutors. They encouraged my love of thought provoking surreal novels (including those by Kafka, Angela Carter, Catherine Dunn & Tim Buton). These authors inspired my series of etchings. Alongside this I exploited my love of magnificent architecture and was often found drawing in the Theatre Royal.
I currently reside in Hastings, a wonderful seaside fishing town, where I continue my artistic journey. My three children, ( my other love), have all grown up now so I am able to fully concentrate on my artwork.
I have exhibited widely & have been commissioned by, 'The Spectator', TK Maxx homewares, a limited edition set of playing cards, c.d covers & my work has been featured in books & magazines.
I suppose I am best known for my Bubblegum Queen & my other altered images. My imagination is such, that I often see an image which is just 'crying out' to be subtly altered. I have recently finished a Covid inspired ( no offense intended) series of cards.
I shall finish off here with a few testimonials from galleries & collectors of my art.
"Sassy Luke is known for being a master of adornment of the icons that paper our every day lives. Tired old images of Queen Elizabeth ll and Jesus H Christ are given a right good snazzing up with wicked humour & precise skill. Comforting, but completely new and better....and blasphemous...and riddled with treason" (Seespray Gallery -Tom Bartlett)
" Sassy Luke is concerned with creating dramatic tension primarily through the interplay of light and dark and by exploiting the tragic/comic potential. She achieves a surreal quality through the distortion of scale and her choice of subsect matter. BY MIXING THE ORDINARY WITH THE EXTRAORDINARY, SASSY LUKE CREATES IMAGES THAT ARE NOT EASILY FORGOTTEN." (Sussex Arts Club -Brighton)
"Alice in Wonderland, as seen by Dali" (Private collector- Jim Mooney)
" The more I look, the more I see" ( Private collector - Dean Williams)
" These etching send me into a totally different world " Private collector- Juanita Homan
I shall always have a passion for art & I love to see people laugh when they view my work. We all need a sense of humour & I love to put a smile on a face.
Thank you for reading this and I hope you enjoy my art.
Any questions please dont hesitate to contact me.
With love
