A Son Writes About his Mom - an interview
I remember how my Mom always used to make all of the Christmas and Valentines cards. She loved making these everyday items into small works of art, not the generic stuff at the store. I sat down with my Mom to ask her some questions about her business the other day. This is what she said:
Q. How did you get into bookbinding?
A. When you were a baby I signed up for a bookbinding class so I could get away from the house for a while. I’d grown up making and building things and I’ve always loved art so bookbinding sounded interesting. Once I took the class I was hooked. Bookbinding is the perfect marriage of design and craftsmanship for a creative perfectionist like me!
Q. How is your studio set up?
A. First, I absolutely love having my very own workspace, and I’m so lucky it has a big window with great morning light. The studio is divided into two main work areas: the clean table, where I do all the designing, packaging and shipping; and the dirty table, where I do anything that involves adhesive or a utility knife. There’s also a paper cutter station with a book press below, and storage – plenty of storage. And the place is always a mess, kind of like your room!
Q. What are the basic steps of making a book?
A. First, I cut and fold the pages so I know how thick to make the spine of the book. This is very important since all my books have enclosed spines. Then I cut all the pieces needed for the book cover: the book board, book cloth and the decorative paper. I glue it all together and it presses for about 24 hours. Then I punch matching holes in the pages and the spine and sew it all up. It sounds easy but it’s actually very time-consuming to get everything lined up just so.
Q. Why do you love creating cool albums for people?
A. I love using my hands to create something from the heart. And what’s better is that even though the books are beautiful when they leave me, they not really finished until my customers fill them with their stories!
It is quite obvious from these statements that my Mom puts her love into every one of her books. I’m no expert in hand-made albums, but it’s clear to me that these handmade albums aren’t just a collection of pages, but rather they are works of art.
A note from Kris...Thank you to my teenage son for helping me tell my story.
Owner, Maker, Designer, And Everything Else!
I'm a lifelong West-Coaster currently living in the magnificent Pacific Northwest. I see my environment as a mosaic of color, texture and pattern and hope this comes through in my work.
Started at Scroll as a foot warmer in February 2012 and recently worked her way up to mischief-maker. Currently eats all discarded book board.

I love to do custom work! Making just the right album for you is very rewarding for me. Please take a moment to read my custom order policies before inquiring about custom work.
The easiest way to get a "custom" item is to browse the "Made-to-Order" sections of the shop. Here you are able to choose from a selection of beautiful cover materials and add your own touch with ribbon color and/or personalization. The production time on Made-to-Order books varies, but generally runs 2-3 weeks. RUSH service may be available - see below.
PROCESS FOR FULL CUSTOM WORK:
If you don't see what you're looking for in the shop, please contact me to get a discussion started about a custom order. The more information I have from you up front, the quicker we can decide if I can make a book that suits your needs. I find it helpful to have the following information from you:
- Number of pages/sheets
- Purpose of the book
- Idea for the cover design
- Whether you have a strong preference for stab or longstitch binding.
- If there is a book in the shop that is similar to what you want, you may attach the link.
Once I have all the information I need, I will provide a quote and an estimated timeline. Please understand that custom pricing may be higher than shop prices in order to cover the time and care I take in making sure you get exactly what you want, and to cover the cost of ordering in any special supplies.
After we've agreed on the details, I will make a custom listing for you. When you purchase and pay for the listing, I will add you to my schedule, order any necessary supplies, and give you a firm ship date.
RUSH service may be available for a 15% fee. Please ask to see if I can accommodate your needs.
THANK YOU for your interest. I am always happy to answer your questions!
