I have bugs in my studio....and that's just the way I like it!!!!

HOW I GOT STARTED-----
I am a self-taught artist who followed a very unorthodox path to jewelry-making. I started beading as a fun and fashionable way to relax during college. After completing a degree in Biology and Chemistry from Pikeville College and subsequently, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky, I headed North with my husband Michael and two cats to be a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin. Though I enjoyed my work as a research scientist, I found great satisfaction in making jewelry. While in Wisconsin, I joined the Madison Bead Society – an open group of bead enthusiasts that gathered monthly to share their love and knowledge of beading. This provided a great forum for me to explore various aspects of jewelry design and I quickly discovered a passion for working with natural materials.
HANDCRAFTED IN KENTUCKY-----
To combine my love of science with art, I returned to my home state of Kentucky and launched a working artist studio called PhbeaD (an acronym of the two words Ph.D. and bead) near the artist community of Berea, KY. I began creating jewelry with various natural materials including my most recent collection of resin jewelry with insect wings. Each piece is individually handcrafted and meticulously sealed to make a perfectly enveloped wing that is resistant to wear-and-tear and maintains the natural colors and patterns in nature with no two pieces ever alike.

Welcome to my online boutique! PhbeaD (an acronym of Ph.D. and bead), is based out of my home studio in Paint Lick, KY and was established as a way for me to combine my training as a Ph.D. biochemist and my love for making artisan jewelry. My work has been on the cover of the Crafts Report Magazine and was recently featured on KET'S Kentucky Life. I was named one of Step by Step Wire Jewelry Magazine's Best of 2012 and have won First Place in the Jewelry category at several juried shows. I exhibit my work at art shows throughout the year, and you can also find my work in stores across KY, OH and MI. If you prefer to shop in person, I invite you to find a gallery or show near you listed on my website at bhttp://www.phbead.com/Show_Schedule_and_Stores.php

I am a mixed media artist, which means that I use as vast array of different techniques to express myself through art. I am a very tactile person, so I find inspiration in textures, especially in the look and feel of natural materials. My goal for each piece is to preserve the fleeting beauty of nature and create jewelry that celebrates where science meets art.
