About

home remodel launches furniture-design company...

what started as a personal quest to furnish a home remodel with unique and interesting pieces that would hold up to the daily grind, has grown into a full-time endeavor. jonathan's affinity for industrial modern design has been inspired in-part by his travels as a professional touring musician, though his current inspiration comes from his biggest project in recent years: the total rehab of a 1970s suburban home in central Florida.

the design process often begins with his wife sarah saying something like, 'honey, i have an idea...' to which he responds by taking her excited, rambling descriptions and rendering them in SketchUp, a 3D imaging software.

from there he sources the materials (wood and steel) and begins the gluing, clamping, planing, sanding, staining, torching, welding, grinding, and sealing necessary to create the beautifully industrial, modern products you see in the shop today.

welcome to seventeen20! we are a husband & wife team, specializing in handmade, industrial modern furniture. each item is handcrafted in our central Florida studio.

our mission is to create home furnishings that marry modern minimalism with industrial toughness using responsibly-sourced materials that can take a beating and look cool doing it.

we are excited to be part of the shift we believe is happening in american culture--away from the instant, mass-produced, disposable, towards the long-awaited, small-batch, forever-cherished.

Shipping

bento benches (4' & 5') & side stools/tables, along with original benches ship UPS Ground. single bar/counter stools ship UPS Ground, while multiples ship freight via YRC or R+L Carriers. all other pieces are shipped freight (YRC/R+L Carriers).

we are also happy to offer white glove delivery service for an additional charge. please add this shipping upgrade to your cart at checkout.

UPS Ground as well as YRC/R+L Carrier freight shipments are delivered “curbside.” you will need to uncrate (carefully! watch out for staples and screws!), carry-in, and assemble your piece (if necessary), as well as dispose of packing material. generally, freight shipments arrive within 5 business days of leaving our studio. since all of our pieces are made of solid wood and steel, they are quite heavy. it is a good idea to invite some able-bodied friends over at delivery time to help you bring in and assemble your new furniture.

white glove delivery service can take up to 3 weeks from when the item leaves our studio, however your furniture will be unpacked, carried into your room of choice, and assembled for you. additionally, all packing material will be disposed of.

with either shipping method, you must provide your shipping address and contact number at checkout, to ensure a hassle-free delivery experience. the phone number you provide will be used to schedule the delivery only. we do not sell or share your information with anyone else. we use it strictly for coordinating the delivery of your order.
Refunds and Exchanges
we take personal pride in the quality and craftsmanship of our furniture, as each piece is created by our own two hands. our attention to detail in design, material, and construction is uncompromising. and so is our commitment to customer satisfaction.

___ // damage ______________________________
if your piece has been damaged in-transit, please keep all crating materials, document the damage by taking clear, unfiltered pictures, and notify us within 3 business days.

if your piece was delivered via white glove delivery service, you must also document the damage with the delivery personnel prior to them leaving your home.

___ // returns ______________________________
we accept returns of our standard pieces within 30 days. please retain all packaging material and contact us as soon as possible for return shipping instructions. you will be responsible for return shipping charges, except when the return is due to a defect or damage. once we have received the return, we will issue a refund for your purchase price only (any charged taxes will be refunded in accordance with state and local laws). shipping charges are non-refundable.

we cannot accept returns of custom orders, including customized dimensions of our standard pieces, except when the return is due to a defect or damage.
Additional policies and FAQs
___ // faqs ______________________________
is the aged finish made with RECLAIMED wood?
no, we use sustainably-harvested, regionally-sourced (southeastern US) wood and then treat it with natural washes (vinegar-based) and sealers (oil and wax) to achieve the aged look. this allows us to create the tone and texture of well-worn wood, without the worry of lead paint, mold/mildew, insects, splitting boards, nails, and limited supply.

is the charred finish a STAIN?
no, the charred finish is based on shou sugi ban, the ancient japanese technique of torching wood to preserve it for use as exterior siding. we scorch the wood to the blackened tone you see in the product photos, which not only gives it the great color, but also exposes the wood's grains and textures. then we seal it with the same natural, floor-grade oil finish used on our other finishes for longterm protection.

can you make a piece in a CUSTOM SIZE and what's the price?
yes, we are always happy to make adjustments to our standard sizes to ensure our pieces fit perfectly in their new homes. please contact us to communicate what it is you're looking to customize. price will vary based on the dimensions and finishes. please note that customized pieces are non-returnable and non-refundable, unless damaged/defective.

can you STAIN your pieces to match my existing wood furniture?
no, unfortunately we do not work with wood stains and are not able to offer color-matching.

how SOON will my new piece be ready to ship?
building a piece of furniture by hand, start to finish, is a process, but one that we relish. from the wood selection, to the arrangement of each plank in its rightful place, to the laminating, planing, sanding, sealing of the wood surfaces, not to mention the welding, grinding, heating up and sealing of the steel, each piece takes a minimum of one and up to six weeks to produce. we are currently (and proudly!) a two-man shop, which means that through every step of the process, your piece is a labor of love. current production (lead) times are listed on every item in our shop. contact us if you are under any time constraints and we will do our best to accommodate.

will my piece require ASSEMBLY?
the original dining table and benches, as well as the bed, require assembly. instructions for assembly, as well as the hardware are included with your piece. the bento dining and coffee tables and benches, as well as the entry table, sideboard, media console, stools, and bar bench, come fully assembled.

how should i CARE for my furniture?
all wood surfaces are sealed with Rubio Monocoat, a natural, floor-grade oil finish. for the first two weeks, we recommend that you wipe clean with a well wrung-out damp cloth (water only, no soap). following the first 2 weeks, use ph-balanced or ph-neutral soaps to clean surfaces. we recommend Rubio Monocoat's Natural Soap*.

darkened steel surfaces are oiled and waxed to minimize oxidation and patina (rust). re-apply Sculpt Nouveau Clear Metal Wax† every 24 months, or as needed. stainless and powder coated steel finishes will not patina and do not require further maintenance.

___ // dos & don'ts ______________________________

to clean:
DO use a well wrung-out damp cloth, along with ph-balanced or ph-neutral cleaners; we recommend Rubio Monocoat's Natural Soap* for wood surfaces
DON'T use ammonia-based or commercial cleaners, solvents, synthetic waxes, or sprays, as they can eat through/dull both the wood and steel finishes

to protect:
DO use trivets for hot pots and pans
DON'T soak wood or leave standing liquids for any length of time
DO protect wood from direct sunlight; constant or direct sunlight can alter finishes and oxidize hardwoods
DO maintain uniform humidity in your home to reduce wood settling/checking (cracking); optimum relative humidity is between 40-50%

to maintain:
DO apply a maintenance product if your wood surfaces look parched or require some rejuvenation, or if your darkened steel surfaces are showing signs of patina (rust); we recommend Rubio Monocoat's Maintenance Oil* or Refresh* for wood surfaces and Sculpt Nouveau's Clear Metal Wax† for darkened steel surfaces
