Got lots of comments!
From Here to There, From Near to Far
I've always been an avid sewer and crafter. At the end of each school year, my mom would ask us to plan what we would like to do for the summer. Because we were so heavily involved in 4-H, sewing something was always on the list to get us ready for the county fair and pageant. As my sisters and I got older, I seemed to be the only one with the sewing bug. I made wallets out of my old jeans, backpacks out of sweaters, jammy pants for my cousin and did most of it by hand. The Christmas after I turned 16 my mother bought me my very own sewing machine.
I didn't have much time to sew after I entered college, but I did get the chance to take up knitting in the UK Knitting Club. I know - 20-somethings huddled in the dorm lobby clickety-clacking our metallic colored needles. It was quite fun :) I didn't really get the chance to sew until my 2nd child was born. My son is a bit OCD about his textures so he must have satin on his skin while he sleeps. He also seems to grow exponentially, so his 'silky' was getting a bit small. I tried to make a replacement for him, but once his younger sister got it, she never let go. She started sleeping through the night, nursing more soundly, and had something tangible to comfort her at the sitter's house. And it just steam-rolled from there. Every one and their mother (me included!) needed a silky satin blanket.
My studio has progressed from a small desk with one little sewing machine to two large office desks with 4 sewing machines and more fabric than I know what to do with. I hope and pray every day that one day I'll be able to stay home with my children and just make blankets. Right now, it's a great supplement to our growing home (you'd think a chemist position would pay well...yeah, me too) and a good excuse to buy more fabric.
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Miscellaneous Aficionado
Creator and general 'do-all-of-it'er in SewChem. I process, cut, embroider, sew, pack and ship your lovely handmade blankets for all ages.
Please be aware that this is my second job after being an analytical chemist. Currently, because of 40+ hours per week at my day job, a newborn and raising 3 other children (yes, husband, you do count), I can only take on so many orders. My shop will be on vacation frequently as I reach my capacity.
I make each blanket from scratch to your specifications and with as much love as I would making my own; for this reason, I keep my number of orders down so that you can receive your blanket in a timely manner and with as much care as it deserves.
Thank you for visiting SewChem! I started making blankets when my son needed a clone of his blanket. When my daughter stole it and took her first long nap, I was hooked. I had to share this sleep technique with the world :0). My daughter's babysitter calls them magic blankets because of their ability to induce sleep. They also cause spontaneous thumb sucking, so make sure you're alone when you cuddle up in your own big blanket.
I love making blankets and feel that they are appropriate for any occasion - my bachelor cousin loves his big black house-warming blanket...and so do his buddies. I am always open to new ideas, new sizes, and new designs. Whatever you have in mind, I can usually create.
Accepted payment methods
- Accepts Etsy gift cards
All residents within Kentucky will be charged a 6% sales tax on their order.
Large items purchased from within the USA are shipped via USPS priority. These Items take 2-3 days to ship after the waiting period for the blanket to be made. Smaller items, such as lovies and changing pad covers will be sent via USPS first class which can take up to 7 days to arrive (usually sooner). I will send confirmation of shipment and tracking information if available (within the USA) to the e-mail address provided in PayPal.
International orders are shipped via First Class USPS to save on shipping. International shipments can take up to 6 (six) weeks from the date of shipment. Customs numbers will be sent to you and can now be used (from Jan 27, 2012) to track a shipment to Canada. Other countries will not have tracking. I am not responsible for customs fees, VAT, or courier fees. In general, this will not be an issue for most countries, but the price of the item does not include any of these additional fees. The buyer is responsible for costs associated with customs or courier fees. I will not decrease the item value or mark as a gift, as this is LYING and can result in prison time and fines for me. Sorry, not worth it.
PLEASE be sure to check your shipping address in PayPal and Etsy. I ship to the address in Etsy, unless otherwise discussed. If an item is returned to me after you have provided the incorrect address, I will send you a PayPal invoice for the cost of returning the item to you at the correct address.
Please remember that shipping time is in addition to my lead time. Requesting an item before my lead time will result in rush order fees as well as upgraded shipping costs if applicable. I will contact you in this case to discuss options.
Items can be shipped to a recipient other than the buyer as a gift. I will include a gift tag with a small note, if desired, but wrapping is an additional cost. Before purchasing, please contact me for a small upgrade fee for gift wrapping.
Refunds and Exchanges
I cannot be responsible for BUYER'S REGRET; I try to describe my items to the best of my ability so that you know exactly what you are receiving, including size, color, design, and font.
If a name is spelled wrong on the invoice, I cannot be responsible and will have to charge for a new blanket if you would like a replacement. A PayPal invoice for shipping and the new blanket will be sent to your e-mail in this case. If I make a mistake structurally, the blanket must be returned to me at your cost. Custom made to order items will not be refunded, but can be replaced.
In case of structure or physical mishap on the blanket itself, I must be contacted within 14 days of receipt of the blanket. I will not refund or replace any blanket after this time. Pictures of the issue must be provided before I accept a return.
Most of my listings are able to be customized with fabric choices, font, name, etc. Everything must be filled out in the note to seller at checkout. If the message to seller has been left blank, you will receive the exact blanket in the listing without personalization. If something is not specified in the note to seller, I assume that you are only changing the things that you've specifed. For instance, if the listing shows a 30x36 blanket with satin trim, blue minky, baby blue satin, font is marque and font color is orange but you request the same size and style in white minky with baby pink satin, and font color Hot Pink, I will assume you would like the same font as shown in the listing. I will contact you only in the case that more pertinent information is missing (that is, if you specify a font, but don't specify a name). I will follow what is on the invoice unless discussed in a subsequent convo.
Embroidery design must be SPECIFIC in the note to seller; if only a first name is given, that is all that will be embroidered on the blanket.
Please contact me before paying if you are concerned that an item will not be delivered in time. My estimated lead time is shown in each listing, however the most accurate lead time is posted in the receipt after payment and in the policies section. Please remember that shipping time is in addition to the lead time.
In case your blankets or other items get dirty, minky and satin wash extremely well and easily; if there is a stain or mark on the blanket, try washing in warm water and check before drying if the stain is gone. Other methods: baby wipe (not sensitive), pre-treat with detergent on spot, windex (weird, but it works wonders). If these don't work, let me know. My chemistry skills are killer in the stain world.
Lost and Stolen Items:
If you do not receive your item and believe it has been lost or stolen, please contact me. If delivery confirmation says the item(s) has been delivered, I will not refund the purchase. Check with neighbors, check the post office, check to make sure it was delivered to the correct address. If the item(s) gets lost in transit (does not show delivery) you will need to first file a report with USPS or contact the facility in which the package was last tracked. Once the blanket has left my sorting facility, I can no longer stop it, reroute, etc. In case of a lost or stolen item, I will replace the blanket at wholesale cost.
