I was pretty excited to find this Crib skirt when thrifting last week. It made the cutest little newborn dress and bonnet!
Sweater Mittens have been flying off my shelves this year! I just added some more cozy warm ones!
I found this cute little curtain topper while thrifting one day and wondered what could I do with it. When I realized I could use the existing casing for a waistband a baby skirt became a great solution!!

About

Upcycled, Recycled, Unique Clothing and Accessories!

Hi there!
Welcome to Sew it Was!! My name is Judy and I live in Toronto, Canada.

Sewing has always been one of my passions. I remember with great fondness all the little dresses my Gram made me and my sisters. She inspired me to start sewing at an early age. First making my own clothes, then for my 4 kids, and now I'm the Gramma sewing for my 6 grandchildren!

After losing my job in 2012 I needed to find a way to occupy my days. I was ready for a challenge and set out to find something different to make my grandkids.

A quick search on the internet led me to the world of upcycling! I found this very intriguing and decided to give it a try.

My passion for sewing exploded!! I absolutely love taking something that once was and refashioning it into something completely new and wearable. I can't look at a man's shirt now without seeing little pants, a girl's skirt, shirt aprons, or scraps made into baby shoes!! Pillowcases make the cutest little dresses! When my husband saw my first pair of pants made from shirt sleeves he came up with the name Shants (pants made from shirts!).

One of the things I love most about sewing this way is searching through thrift shops for the next item I can deconstruct. I love using vintage fabrics, giving them new life.

As I began this journey I received great feedback from family and friends who encouraged me to start selling. To do that I was juried and accepted into the Arts Market in Toronto. I needed a business name. I sent out an email to my family (I am the oldest of 10). This quickly turned into a very enjoyable online contest with many hilarious entries . After 3 days and 101 entries I narrowed it down to my top 7 and sent it back out. Sew it Was, which I loved from the moment I said it out loud, came out on top!! Many thanks goes to my brother-in-law Gord.

You should know I have learned a lot about sewing these last 54 years, and I work on each item until I am completely happy with it. I'm sure my Gram would be very pleased and surprised to know my items are going all over the world!! Some ideas I dream up, some come from friend's suggestions, and some come from the internet in which case I always try make it my version by adding my own little details.

Thank you for looking at Sew it Was and for considering homemade. I hope you find something you like!

All my life I have been creating and have enjoyed many different crafts but I always come back to sewing. Recently I discovered the world of upcycling and have fallen in love with giving new life to previously loved items.
