By selecting used or discarded materials from second hand stores (such as fabric scraps and trimmings, t-shirts, bedding, or curtains) Sew Minimal seeks to create unique, sustainable, and affordable women’s fashion and accessories as an alternative to the “fast” fashion industry that is so detrimental to the environment and capitalizes off of inhumane labor practices. Each piece is sewn by Kelly Colleen and truly one of a kind. With the exception of zippers, thread, and other notions we avoid purchasing new materials.

Some minor alterations can be done. If you see something you'd like to purchase but the hem length or straps look too long, send me a convo and I'll alter it if possible. Also, if you have a request for a particular size, color, or style of garment let me know!

About SewMinimal

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to check out my shop. Few things in life bring me joy like making clothes. I love selecting materials, pairing different prints and textures, sewing the garment, and the satisfaction that comes from creating something unique and wearable.

My mother started teaching me how to sew when I was 7. We made a dress for my American Girl doll (I had the Molly doll). My mom is an excellent seamstress and always made us the best Halloween costumes and Easter dresses. She gave me a sewing machine when I was 18 or 19 and I started making a few (very wonky) things here and there. One day, I was making a dress for myself and I realized I didn't have enough fabric to finish the bodice. My grandfather had recently passed away and I inherited some vintage cloth place mats from his house. I decided to use those instead and what do you know, it turned out pretty great! Thus my use of re-purposed/up-cycled materials was born.

I have always been a big thrift store shopper. Not only can you find great stuff for a great price, but it's also environmentally friendly. Purchasing fabric from conventional fabric stores is expensive and those materials are often produced using unfair labor practices and processes incredibly damaging to the environment. Friends and family have always encouraged me to try to sell my clothes but the amount of time it takes to sew something plus the price of purchasing fabric meant I would have to sell the clothes at an exorbitant price. Buying thrifted materials eliminated this dilemma, plus it allows me to join the sustainable fashion movement.

Now, about patterns. In my mind, patterns are often either more complicated than they need to be and/or don't fit the human body well. I learned to sew using patterns, but I eventually started cutting those up, getting rid of the instructions, and creating my own templates. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to design, but I look forward to pushing my creative abilities and learning new techniques.
