I love my new leg warmers! I wanted a pair of good quality wool leg warmers to wear at ballet, but all of the pairs available on the dancewear websites are made of acrylic, so I turned to Etsy and found Amaryah. Great personal service and lovely leg warmers - just the right length and made with a heel cut out for me too. Perfect, thanks I'm chuffed to bits :-)

About

Wool Clothing, Made by Hand

Each article of Sew Oiseau clothing begins in a scrap of reclaimed wool fabric, often not much bigger than the size of a pillow. From there, it may be cut into a child's undershirt, pieced with other colours into a woman's skirt, or stripped for rug-making.

Before upcycling was fashionable, wool clothes didn't stand a chance if tarnished by moths or unraveled along the hem line. I love that I get the opportunity to repurpose these fibres into something my own and am honoured that there are lovely folks out there who appreciate the results.

I'm driven by my love of vibrant colour, my desire to stay warm, and my wish to raise my children without spending too much time in front of the washing machine (see FAQs for more about wool care). Instead, I want to give them time to play, enjoy the food we make and grow, and witness the wild spaces in our backyard and neighbourhood. Your purchase allows me to do just that.

Thank you for sharing your time and supporting handmade!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I am happy to fill special orders and custom requests. Because items are constructed from recycled materials, colour, weight, structure and fiber may vary and/or be limited in supply.
Due to the nature of my source materials, I am unable to fulfill precise colour requests. I have reclaimed wool in dozens of shades and colours and cannot photograph each one nor provide a list of what I have in stock because it is constantly changing. Thank you for respecting my creative license and for exercising flexibility when placing a custom order.

Care instructions

Please wash your woolens only when necessary in order to get the most out of them. Air drying is the preferred cleaning method because the fibers in wool react with oxygen to neutralize any sweat or other residue. If soiled, a mild detergent is recommended. Medium and heavy weight woolens can better handle a washing machine (be sure to use cold water) but hand washing is recommended for fine wools (such as merino) and cashmere. Wool should never be put in the dryer. Line drying is best.

Gift wrapping and packaging

If you are purchasing an item as a gift, please indicate so when ordering.

Local Buyers

Please use the coupon code, LOCAL for free pick-up instead of shipping charges. If you wish to visit the studio in person, contact Sew Oiseau to arrange a time.

Sizing details

Buyers are responsible for verifying the measurements in the custom sizing chart included in the listing. If you are ever unsure, please include your chest, waist, hip and height measurements as well as desired inseam (crotch to leg cuff), rise (top of waistband to crotch), or sleeve length if applicable.
Please remember that children's sizes are based on the suggested measurements attributed to each age not the current age of your child (ie if your child is 2 but wears 3T clothing, order the 3T size).

Express Shipping

If you wish to have an item sent faster or more securely, please convo prior to purchasing. For reference, expedited shipping for international orders, which s includes tracking, can cut shipping time in half but cost double the regular price. Express posts - with guaranteed arrival in 2-3 days - costs a minimum of $30.

Recycled Textiles

All items are made from reclaimed textiles. Sew Oiseau cannot ultimately guarantee the integrity of the recycled materials used. However the utmost care is taken prior to reconstruction to ensure that the wool is of the highest quality. Stains are removed and strong scents are naturally eliminated using a vinegar bath.
