About

Sewing Is In Our Blood

I am a third generation seamstress. My grandmother taught my mother how to sew when she was 8 years old. Grand-moo sews only when she has too now. But she loves pulling apart many of our materials for quicker reconstruction. My mother earned a living sewing most of her life. She worked in line production in the 1970's, manufactured from home in the 80's and 90's, and turned to strictly alterations in the late 1990's.

My mom made most of my clothing when I was growing up. I was very hard to fit. I wanted to fit in with the other kids when I was a teenager and resented my handmade one of a kind wardrobe. The only sewing I wanted to learn was for my Barbie doll, she only came in a bathing suit back then, lol. My attitude changed after my first 4 years in Active Duty Army. Wearing a camouflage uniform and blending in with everyone around me, I was finally ready to learn my mother's skills so I could guarantee no one else would be wearing what I wore! Didn't take long before my friends wanted me to sew for them. Custom orders turned into making inventory for local festivals. Within a year I realized how important an online shop would be for keeping my local customers and expanding outside our area. I found a great online home with loyal customers in Etsy!

When we opened Sewsomer, mom and I were both creating the inventory. Six months later we opened Cbrendasew to expand our clientele and post vintage items. We built a duplex log cabin on the lake while I was Active Duty Army. I lived up stairs for the first five years, then after my son was born, my husband and I moved about 25 minutes away. Our shop is in mom's spare bedroom on the main floor. Hundreds of pieces of inventory, piles of jeans, racks of things to recycle, and 40 years of mom's fabric addiction take up her dining room and formal living room!

In fall of 2011 I had a son, Laken Breeze. After he learned to walk, my time for sewing inventory disappeared. I handle all the computer portion of both Etsy stores, while mom gets to have all the creative fun sewing! Next year Laken will start school and I look forward to sewing inventory again.

Looking ahead for 2016:
Cbrendasew will be closing so we can focus more on Sewsomer and build up the shop's inventory. Cbrendasew's shop inventory marked down for quick sale. We stopped vending local festivals in 2015. My son starts school in August and I return to the sewing shop to create my wearable treasures again!!

Frequently asked questions

Sizing details

Every item has exact measurements in the description. For adjustable size skirts and pants, determine fit by comparing the waist band opening size to your maximum hip measurement. Your hips must be SMALLER than the band opening to get the item on. The drawstring will cinch down to any smaller waist size. With all items (unless you want a skin tight fit) allow several inches bigger in the hips than your actual size to allow for movement and sitting.

Custom and personalized orders

Because upcycled designs are difficult to duplicate and our supply of recyclables is limited, we are unable to take custom orders in a traditional manner. Size requests are encouraged on our most popular items, but color and prints are subject to the fabrics that are available. Some items can be re-sized or altered to suite a custom request.
Ask about sending your own jeans or neckties to be up-cycled!

Care instructions

Most of our items are easy care; wash in cold water with like colors and dry on regular settings. Necktie skirts, items with lace, or fancy trims should be washed inside out on gentle and hang to dry or use low heat. Recommend to dry clean long necktie dresses.

International shipping?

We ship to all other countries using USPS International First Class mail. Delivery time to Canada can take 1-6 weeks, everywhere else can expect 2-6 weeks for delivery. Buyer is responsible for additional fees for customs/duty charges. We cannot mark packages as "Gifts" to help you evade customs, as that's international mail fraud and can get us fined or thrown in jail.

What is a RESERVED item?

RESERVED items are promised to someone and waiting for payment. Usually they are in lay-away until the following pay day. We are happy to RESERVE any item for up to 30 days.

How long will it take my item to arrive?

All U.S. orders are shipped from my home in Southwest Virginia using Priority Mail. Purchases made Monday-Friday are usually shipped the same day or the following day. Weekend purchases are shipped on Monday. Once the item is shipped, it will take 1-3 business days to arrive on the East Coast and 2-3 business days to the Mid-West, South West and West Coast.
See Shop Announcement for DELAYED shipping dates if I will be out of town during holidays.
Ask if you need a rush on shipping, Express mail to deliver over night costs about 3 times more.

Custom and personalized orders

Custom requests can take up to 10 business days to complete. If we are waiting on your materials, then add the time it takes for them to arrive to our shop.
