Artwork and Illustrations for the Child in You

sHandke ART began as a venue to sell my artwork and whimsical drawings. While living in a small apartment in Boston, I began creating so many black and white line drawings on leftover papers that they quickly began to pile up, so I decided to post a few for sale. They sold, so I was encouraged to keep creating and to quit hoarding.

I thoroughly enjoy processes when it comes to creating, and I think it's great when something has a story. So most of the original drawings I create are on recycled or reclaimed paper using black ink. The permanence of ink helps me to become more innovative and create something even when there are so-called mistakes. Sometimes the paper has markings on it that others left behind before I even begin the drawings. Yes. I pick up others' trash to create art.

I am an artist who enjoys customizing fashion items. I first began working with Toms shoes the second year that they launched their One Day Without Shoes. I love the concept of their company. They are called Toms, because they are "shoes for tomorrow" and a company that believes in giving to others. That's why I paint on their shoes! I have been found at their Style Your Sole events in this area. More recently, I’ve been working on customizing my kids’ clothing and shoes. Look for new items to appear occasionally that are related to this.

After I began establishing my shop, I decided to teach myself to screen print. I began by using freezer paper, and creating stencils, but I quickly discovered that it would be much simpler to learn to use a silkscreen. In the past few years, I have created a "studio" in our unfinished basement where I can print on tees, totes, and paper. This has become a fun place for me to escape when I need a minute or two to myself. Oh yes. Most importantly, I neglected to mention that I am a Mom! I have two fabulous boys who are a amazing source of inspiration.

Whenever I spend a day outside playing or even inside creating with the boys, I discover something new for myself and am inspired to keep on drawing and painting. Their room is a place where I love to hang out, because I created a fun and colorful space where they can play (or rest). Reading books, drawing with chalk, painting with paints, drawing with markers, creating books together, or piecing together Legos and puzzles has become a great way to entertain the boys and encourage my creativity.

Nonetheless, I draw a lot of inspiration from nature and the world that surrounds me. It's a happy place to be, and I hope to share that with you when you purchase something from my shop.

sHandke ART is my business name, and this is where you can find the artwork and "art stuff" for sale by the artist Shawna L. Handke. Everything you find in my etsy shop is created by me.

After attending school for graphic design for several years, I was uncertain what I really wanted to do with my life, so I took some time off. Eventually, I finished school and received a Bachelor of Arts in Painting. I was uncertain that I would ever do anything related to my field, as I got tangled up in the ropes of retail. I have also began working as an illustrator, which culminates my graphic design and retail experience perfectly.

Most of my current artwork is created using reclaimed or recycled resources, and I aspire to create something new out of even the simplest scribbles that others may have left behind. Of course, this is how I began creating the scribbles-sketches. I had found others' scribbles and transformed them into original drawings. Now, I consider this work a process of "automatic drawing," and most of these works have been transformed into original illustrations.

I create all of the artwork that you see in the shop, and I use my basement as a screen printing studio.

Kids t-shirts are temporarily in this shop while I set up a new shop for that collection. We're calling it Wee Wild Ones! Check it out as we set up shop:

If you would like to see more of my artwork, I have created an online portfolio, and you can find that at

I'm also a proud member of two etsy teams, including ecoetsy and the Hudson Valley Etsy Team. For more details on the etsy teams, visit the etsy Community.

Returns and exchanges
Please contact me if you are unsatisfied and have issues with any of my products. Each return is handled on a case by case basis. All returns that are approved must be received by sHandke ART prior to a refund being processed. Any returned items must be returned in their original packaging or similar packaging (a sturdy shipping box with protection for the artwork) and must be mailed USPS First Class with Delivery Confirmation, UPS or FedEx.

PayPal is accepted in US Dollars. I also accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. (Please contact me if you would like to pay using your credit card over the phone.) Other arrangements may be made, if necessary. Contact me for more information. Payment must be made in full and have cleared before the item is shipped.

If you are a New York state resident, I will charge the standard 8.375% for tax purposes.
All orders are processed right away, and shipments go out on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. Due to the extra process involved in Custom TOMS orders, they will take more time. Please see the shop announcements for an estimated timeline.

Custom TOMS orders are shipped Flat Rate Priority USPS unless you have requested another form of shipment. If you are not in a rush to receive your order, I can make a special listing for you. Otherwise, this is how it will be shipped.

All of my artwork is shipped the same way. Very carefully. It's one of my favorite bits about selling artwork online. The artwork is sealed, and protected by heavy-duty cardboard or acid-free matboard.
Additional policies and FAQs

Please contact me for a price and quantity list.

I continually search for local and global places to show my artwork. If you like my work and want to contact me about a space where you think my work would "shine," please do!

I do create custom requests! If there is a work of art that you really like that has already sold, I am willing to create something similar for you. NO two original pieces are just alike! Contractual Agreements must be completed prior to a large project, and a 50% deposit is required for any custom order. If the order totals $100 or less, I need to have payment in full prior to beginning the project.
