Sharing Snips Scherenschnitte is an online studio featuring the papercut artwork of Amanda Mattison. Scherenschnitte means “scissor cuts” and is an art dating back to 15th century Switzerland. The oldest documented papercut art is from 6th century China. Papercutting traditions and styles have arisen across the world throughout countries including China, Japan, Philippines, India, Israel, and Mexico. I was thrilled to come across this historical tidbit recently because I realized I am not alone in my love for this medium.

Each of my original designs is hand-cut from a single sheet of acid-free, color-fast, light-fast paper. My work is spontaneous and unique as I do not cut from any type of printed pattern, stencil or picture. I refer to photographs I have taken for my design inspiration, then use a specialized finger-mounted blade to free-hand detailed cuts in paper. In essence, I am sketching with a knife.

I have been thrilled to discover a unique peace and a meditative calm from this work. Often in life, I become engulfed by choices, overwhelmed by decisions – in papercutting it either “is” or it “isn’t.” I focus on a small space and choose to either remove a piece or to leave a piece. I make a simple yes or no decision over and over and over. And when I pan out to take in the full image, I am overjoyed with the result.

Final presentation of papercut artwork is largely dependent upon the preference of the collector. Therefore pieces are sold independently from frames. Your shipment will include the signed, original hand-cut paper artwork; a mat; archival backing; protective sleeve and packaging.

Papercut art pieces are striking when displayed in a floating mount UV glass frame and will cast lovely shadows against a wall throughout the day. Pieces are also well-displayed against illustration board or archival mat inside a classic frame. If you would like to have a piece framed, please message me regarding purchase a custom framing package.
