Work by Shayla Fish

Inexplicable collages and graphite drawings are my specialty.
My collages are derived from a variety of vintage ephemera, illustrations, and storybooks.

I love creating collages but I also love almost all mediums in the art world. Painting and drawing have always been my top mediums to work with. Lately I've loved ceramics and printmaking. I feel as an artist I go through waves of inspiration and experimentation. This helps further skills in different mediums but also helps me find myself as an artist in society.

My inspiration changes as time goes by. Although, I've always loved the etchings in the Alice in Wonderland books as a child. From then on I've strived to produce the linework in those illustrations. The imaginative aspect of Alice in Wonderland and the crossover to the surreal realm has inspired me to create my own creatures. I'm very interested in curiosity cabinets, scientific illustrations, anatomy, botanical illustrations, etc., and have always adored artwork by Beatrix Potter. These things have become a huge inspiration in my artwork. Throw in some surrealism and collaging and you've got yourself a nice work of art!

The process of creating a unique collage is different every time. Sometimes my imaginative six-year-old wants to help as well and we create collaborative collages together. Most of the time it is just easier to have pieces pre-cut and to begin fitting things together as puzzle pieces. The rest of the time I fill up a sketchbook with ideas as I go for future collages. I like to do paper collages and digital collages, each have their pros and cons and I enjoy doing both.

My favorite artists include: Jan Svankmajer, Robert Crumb, J. J. Grandville, Beatrix Potter, Roland Topor, Higuchi Yuko, Max Ernst, Henry Darger, Toyen, Dorothea Tanning, Frida Khalo, Satoshi Kon, Leonora Carrington, Luigi Serafini, Hayao Miyazaki, Bill Plympton, Suehiro Maruo, Junji Ito, and many more.
