About

COLOUR, FORM AND TEXTURE TAKES HOLD

Hello Everyone, I have just opened up my third Etsy shop after realising that my life long passion for wool has been lurking there all the time, waiting to pounce on my creative habit. I have two other Etsy shops, Jane Bari Design that I opened in 2013 and Jane Bari Beads that I opened in 2014. Sheep Shed Yarns can be read in two ways - the yarns I create with my hands and creativity and the "yarns" to use our wonderful Australian patois, that all of us speak in our lives - our narratives - our personal definitions that state who we are in this life. I also have an artistic narrative which runs through the core of my life experience and I am one of quite a few artists in my family. I have been an indie dyer for many decades in reality so I find this "indie" description a pleasant term of reference for what I have always done. Sheep Shed Yarns offers you an ever increasing range of indie dyed commercially prepared wool, gorgeous hand spun wool and dyed wool rovings that positively excite me just to look at them and consider their colour possibilities when prepared and spun up into wool. I am slowly creating lovely crocheted garments, afghans and throws as well. There is something about wool and fibres in general that no human product will ever be able to replicate. Wool keeps us warm and keeps us cool. Wool is comfort and heartfelt memories and joy and celebration. When I sit down to crochet, I am honouring my maternal ancestors; all of whom were resourceful and talented women and all of whom lived in abject poverty.

Frequently asked questions
CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Although I offer some products that are a "sock yarn" blend of wool and nylon, I only recommend handwashing. Gentle hand wash in barely lukewarm water with a quality wool mix is recommended. Do not wring or agitate to avoid felting. Do not wash in hot water as this will also felt the fibre. Do not place in a tumble dryer either as this will felt and ruin the fibre. Gently squish out excess water but DO NOT WRING OR TWIST at all. Just press the wool together gently once only to remove excess rinse water and then proceed to lay out to dry on a garment rack in the shade. Shape the garment when it is newly placed on the rack and leave it to dry naturally. Look after wool and you will enjoy your knitting/crochet/weaving for many years.

CAKE/BALL WINDING SERVICE

By default, commercial hanks I have dyed will be sold to you as a hank. If you wish to have a hank of wool converted into a very easy to use center pull cake rather than putting aside time and pulling your hair out in frustration in dealing with knots and kinks, please make a selection from the drop down Options Menu on the right hand side next to the relevant product. Commercial hanks of wool are a real headache to knit in their original format. The cake winding service is recommended.

HAND MADE IN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

Sheep Shed Yarns creations are all produced in a clean, smoke free and perfume free household. We live like this in a clean dairy country environment that is pollution free because I have multiple chemical sensitivity. We have a non shedding Shih Tzu dog called Teddy but he has no contact at all with any of my wool based creations. I only use quality wool mix and rainwater when washing and setting yarn and dyes. All products are air dried outside in pollution free air. Once made up, each creation is carefully catalogued and stored away in a sealed bag to ensure no contamination with anything at all.

DYE ISSUES

I use quality acid dyes only in the manufacture of my designs. All hand spun and commercially spun wool, once dyed, is washed in quality wool mix and rinsed several times in rain water to take out any residual dye bleeding. However, I do recommend you wash your knitted or crocheted up garment separately the first couple of times as sometimes there is a very feint residual dye present. All hand spun wool is washed again in rainwater after spinning to further set the ply. There may be a minute amount of vegetable matter in my hand spun wool as I have prepared the wool from fleece to finish here at home. The only mechanisation I employ are my two hands and flicker combs, drum carder, spinning wheel, yarn swift and countless hours of labour.

ROVING CAKES v PLAITED FINISH

I photograph each roving batch I make as a flat, circular"cake" and not plaited up. I do not plait up my roving at all so that you are able to see the entire colourway of each roving in detail when considering a purchase. I also photograph both sides of each roving cake so you can see the colour variations present.

HAND SPUN PRESENTATION

I am happy to ball up hand spun wool into a cake for free. Please ask for this service if you are purchasing any hand spun wool I have hand spun myself. This free service is only available for my creations under "Handspun Art Yarn" and not commercially prepared wool. Please write your request for converting hand spun wool into a cake in the comments box when you place your order and I will be happy to create a centre pull ball for you. Otherwise, your hand spun wool will be posted off in hank format.

SLIGHT WEIGHT VARIATIONS IN HANKS

I purchase commercial hanks in particular "set" weights. However, after the dyeing process and the removal of all the extra strings that are applied to hanks to keep them together, hanks may lose up to 5-7 grams in weight. This is a common occurrence as hanks are weighed with the separation strings included.

SHIPPING TO YOUR COUNTRY?

As you may have noticed, I offer free shipping on some items for Australian buyers. If you have a hankering for something I have made and it is not listed as shipping to your country, please write me a note and I can then obtain a shipping quote. I have excluded some heavy items such as the beautiful sofa throws/afghans I make from shipping overseas due to the rip off prices our postal system charges us here in Australia. I am happy to obtain a quote and write back with details if you wish to purchase. Thank you.
