Original pen and ink illustration inspired by nature, horror, and fairy tales.

I'm Shelby Elizabeth, an illustrator living and working in Austin, Texas.

In 2014, I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, where I obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration.

My artwork is completed using primarily traditional mediums, concentrating on pen and ink. From a young age I was attracted to the qualities of ink drawing. The permanence of each mark, rather than being intimidating, has always and excited and challenged me. The need for patience, attention to detail, and at the same time spontaneity lends itself to the beauty of the medium. Expressing the world through line, whether it be creating the course texture of a tree or the soft delicacy of a flower petal, allows me to understand each object I draw with more clarity.

Currently, nature has been my primary focus. I enjoy rendering plants and animals to both improve my own abilities and to depict their expressive nature. Exploring wildlife, either directly from life or through a photograph, helps me to reinvigorate my passion for nature.

In addition to my wildlife drawings, I love creating illustrations for classic fairy tales. Illustration has often accompanied the retelling of fables to give them life and further meaning. It's my delight to carry on the tradition of depicting timeless fairy tales and modern lore.

In the future I hope to challenge myself further and dedicate myself to pen and ink illustration.
