About

Shepherds Grove - An Ongoing Journey

Shepherds Grove is my small batch pottery and gift studio. It was Spring of 2004 when the idea for Shepherds Grove was born. There were a couple of powerful but random events that happened around that time: the passing of my family's first dog, Boomer; and a trip to San Francisco.

In the Fall of 2003, I visited San Francisco with my mom. We went to the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero - it was Saturday, during the farmers market. The scene was colorful and vibrant with people everywhere, produce of every variety, wonderful food to sample, and olive oil. There were also baby olive trees being sold in one of the shops. Right then and there, I fell in love with olive oil and olive trees. I flew home the next day with bottles of olive oil and, when I got home, I ordered 3 trees from that shop in the Ferry building. When they arrived at my house, I planted them in my yard and have loved looking at them every since.

A few short months later we would go through a very sad loss. People who have dogs that they consider family will have no problem understanding this loss. This was my husbands and my first dog; our first big responsibility, as we had no kids at the time. He was a Germans Shepherd puppy, a gift from my brother who ran a German Shepherd rescue in San Diego, where I’m from. I went head-long into German shepherds and joined a local Schutzhund club where we trained and competed in obedience, tracking, and protection. It was a glorious time and Boomer and I lived for it. Boomer saw us through 3 babies and watched over our flock as they grew. In the Spring of 2004, when he was almost 10, we had to put him down because degenerative myelopathy was robbing him of the use of his legs and his will to live - I saw it so clearly in his eyes. He was put down in our home, with us lying along side him. It was horrible and sad saying goodbye but I wouldn’t have changed thing - he was such a joy so it was only fitting that it should be so hard to say goodbye.

With the three trees in my yard and our beloved Boomer so much on my mind, Shepherds Grove came to be. The love and loss I felt for Boomer turned into desire to create things with his likeness on them. I was very drawn to Maiolica style pottery and had the idea of incorporating German Shepherds into the style. A stay-at-home mom, with not a single pottery class under my belt (I’m a fisheries biology major with a Masters in biology), I purchased a kiln and began to teach myself how to paint, glaze, fire, and do all manner of things I’d never done before. I started by painting commercially available earthenware bisque, like what you would paint at a paint-your-own pottery studio. Soon after, I began to desire a stronger ware that would hold up well to everyday use, so I taught myself how to slip cast stoneware. I make functional ware and some animals - I'm a sucker for animals of all kinds. And my line-up grew to include many dog breeds, with the list growing all the time. I now create some of my decoration using decals which I design, make, and apply in studio. This has provided me with a greater production capacity as well as color consistency between batches. I truly love the process of creating - beginning with the oozy grey liquid clay and ending with a bright cheerful piece of pottery, with a dog on it looking back at me. Oh, and just so you know, the Fall after Boomer passed, we received our second German Shepherd puppy, Dante. Part inferno at times (he's an excellent watch dog) but sweet and loving and an excellent playmate to the kids.

These special friends that share our lives really are such a gift. It is my desire that my items inspire the same kind of joy ~ Christine

I do all I can to make shipping reasonable and I ship in a timely manner.

ORDER PROCESSING TIME
In stock items (i.e. not custom items) are processed and shipped within 1-3 days of when payment is received (closed weekends and Holidays). If paying by check, this means I will need to wait for the check to arrive before I can ship your item.

SHIPPING CARRIERS/LOCAL ORDERS
I use USPS First Class primarily for shipping small items like jewelry. And Parcel Post for my ceramics, though, sometimes, I use Priority if there is not much difference between Parcel Post and Priority prices, as if often the case at lower weights. And, if the box is big and heavy, FedEx is often more affordable. I make every effort to find the least expensive means of shipping.

If you require a faster shipping option, kindly let me know and I'll research the additional shipping charge for you. I will then send you an invoice via PayPal for so that you can easily pay the additional shipping charges.

For international orders, the item will go First Class, unless you have made other arrangements with me.
