About ShieldmaidenCandles

Sales 847

Smells like Valhalla.

Battle, open wilderness, camaraderie, crisp air, the touch of ancient gods. All these are feelings I seek to capture with my line of 100% soy candles. Vikings in the modern age, yearning for simpler days.

I'm a Viking and medieval enthusiast, living in Maryland with husband and children. I love fantasy, JRR Tolkien, video games, CS Lewis, Game of Thrones, comic books, and all things Norse.

My passion is creation, and making these soy candles is a meditative and fun experience. Making the Viking themes and stories for each candle is something I love, and showing my children how to create and have pride in making things with our hands is a point of pride for me. Everything in this shop is made from start to finish by me in our home.

Thank you for supporting a very small American business, and helping a family learn to be proud makers!

All of our candles are handmade in very small batches in the USA. There are some things we’d like you to know about the newest addition to your household:

-Soy wax is a very different creature from the candles you may be used to, and has some properties that many aren't aware of until they enter the world of soy candles. Soy is very heat and humidity sensitive; this may result in variation on the surface of the candle, or on the inside of the jar, called "frosting" or "wet spots". This is a normal feature of soy candles, and does not in any way affect the quality of the candle, or its burn time.

-Soy candles are “clean burning”, and do not generally make soot. Make sure to keep your wick trimmed to about one quarter of an inch for best results.

-The first time you burn your candle, make sure to allow the wax to pool entirely across the top. Soy wax has “memory”, and if you don’t allow it to melt completely across the top, your candle will likely “tunnel” and waste wax. Burn your candle for 2-3 hours at a time for best results.

-Soy wax is an environmentally friendly wax, made with all renewable resources.

-The melting point is much lower for soy candles

-Your candle jar can be cleaned with hot water and soap when the candle is finished, and be reused!

-I try to make as much of what I do environmentally friendly and USA-sourced as possible. My essential oils are from the United States, the soy wax is processed in the United States from soybeans also grown by American farmers. The glass packaging I use for the candles and other products are also made in the USA! My labels are printed by an American company too. I don't use any paraffin or other petroleum based products in my candle making, to try to make them as renewable and clean as possible.
