About

An artist in love with gorgeous bright colors and pretty scenes

Shirley Lowe was born “artsy” into a musically talented family. Starting from an early age, at her home in Laurel, Mississippi, she showed an interest in drawing, painting, writing, and “making things”. She took piano lessons, but by the age of about 13 the visual arts won her over!

As a teenager, she studied drawing and painting, and went on to study further at the University of Southern Mississippi. Shirley and her father owned a custom frame shop in Laurel in 1976-1982, where she also sold her art. In 1982, that led to becoming a manufacturer’s sales rep in the field of picture framing and art, and moving to the Atlanta, GA area. For 32 years, Shirley worked in this career, traveling the southeastern U.S., and selling art and picture frame moulding, retiring in 2015. As is so often the case with busy people, she put aside her talents for the sake of her career. She was frustrated with this, and often felt the pull of creativity. Shirley vowed, upon the return of one particularly long and dismal sales trip, that it was time to start painting again…and immediately! In 2010, she “started over”, and began painting in acrylics, and working with a combination of acrylics and collage on canvas. While missing out on years of her own art production, the many years of advising other artists, as well as selling to galleries and frame shops, seemed to sharpen her sensitivity to design, color awareness, and texture, while providing an education within itself. With a love of the outdoors, she is drawn to subjects revolving around nature, such as flowers, trees, fruits, or garden scenes. These range from fairly realistic representations to “getting funky” with collage. The history loving side of her also enjoys painting heirloom items. These works are more realistic.

Shirley’s life has proven her theory that “artsiness” and creativity will inevitably manifest itself in one’s life in one way or another, even if it is not actively pursued. She is an avid gardener, having achieved the status of Certified Master Gardener. She is married, and also enjoys genealogy, Daughters of the American Revolution, and spending time with her retired husband.
