If it had been an option, I would have stayed in 4th grade forever. But designing products with a school-age nostalgia isn't a bad second choice.

dirtsa studio was born accidentally.

Many people think my previous job -- a display artist for Anthropologie -- is a dream position. I loved being creative every day, but I found many aspects of the job restricting and unsatisfactory. So I quit.

While I looked for a new job I started designing some products of my own, just for fun. I posted my creations for sale online and they quickly sold. I posted more, and more sold. Soon I had so much business that I realized I had created a new job for myself.

I named my business after my Swedish grandmother, Astrid. She was an amateur painter and humorously signed many of her works under “Dirtsa” — her first name spelled backwards.

Today, dirtsa studio delights in creating mindful and playful products with a nostalgic bent.

I firmly believe that everyday life can be made better by creating playful and beautiful spaces in which to live and work. I know cute housewares will never change the world, but they may change *your* world just a bit (I know they've changed mine).

Rebecca Rodriguez is a graduate of Yale University and the American Material Culture Program at Winterthur, the foremost museum of American decorative arts. Prior to starting dirtsa studio, she worked as a display artist at Anthropologie.
