Behind the scenes at SidneyandBetty

If you're looking for stylish and unique pet products then you've come to the right place. I make hand crafted dog harnesses, collars and leads for dog owners who want something as different and individual as you and your pooches are.

I started sewing around ten years ago and love making dresses and home accessories. I'm a real fabric magpie and can't resist quirky and novelty prints. As the owner of two little pugs - Sidney and Betty (no surprise there!) I started to wonder if I could create things for them to wear that were fun, unique and no-one else had. Once I got started the ideas kept coming and the result is my little shop.

The pieces I make are high quality, if there's a stronger thread or a sturdier buckle I buy it and use it. I never cut corners or compromise on standards. I'm really hard on myself when it comes to stitching and quality - I'd never make your dog something I wouldn't put on my own.

Check out the shop for all sorts of different style harnesses, collars and leads. If you can't see something you love then please drop me a message. There are thousands of fabrics on the market so there will be something that speaks to you, whether it's to do with unicorns, superheroes or a classic tweed. Whatever you fancy, I can make it.

All items are handmade to order in my lovely craft studio in Yorkshire.

  • P Broom

    Owner, Designer, Marketer

I'm Preya and I'm the designer, tailor, marketer, question answerer and dog cuddler of SidneyandBetty. :) I love sewing, photography and marketing. If I'm not cutting and stitching I'm probably on Instagram or dreaming up new designs.

  • Sidney

    Brand Ambassador

Sidney is our chief tester, sniffer and model (paid in cheese). He is a lovely, gentle boy who likes to sit and wait for his picture to be taken. Whenever his mum makes him a new harness he waggles his bum in excitement about going for a walk.

  • Betty

    Brand Assistant

Betty is our crazy, lively harness tester. Betty claims that she pulls hard on her lead to help us test harnesses! She rarely sits still and hopes to be a dog model/brand ambassador one day. She inputs heavily into the design of girl dog clothes.

Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping take? And what do you charge?

We offer free shipping on all orders.

In the UK we use Royal Mail Second Class.

For international orders we use International Standard - this is NOT a tracked service, any customers wishing to have tracking and faster delivery need to select a delivery upgrade.

My dog doesn't seem to like wearing a harness, what can I do?

Sometimes wearing a harness or collar can feel strange to a dog. It can also be scary for some dogs to put a harness over their heads. Try to get your dog used to putting the harness on and wearing it in the house before going out. You can also use treats and rewards to praise your dog for putting the harness on. Soon enough it will become their favourite game!

My dog pulls when walked, are these harnesses suitable for him?

Although we've tested Sidney&Betty harnesses on walks (and believe us Betty has put them through their paces) and we check each one before dispatch, we don't recommend them for big dogs who pull hard on their lead.

Please use your judgement when walking near cars, roads and traffic as we cannot be held responsible for any incidents that may occur.

Please check your harness regularly for signs of wear and tear, and do not use if damaged.

Why are some of your products more expensive than others?

We take pride in our craftsmanship and the materials we use. We specialise in high quality tweeds and designer fabric. Some of these materials are more expensive to purchase than others.

Sometimes we have to waste material to make sure you get the best placement of print on the harness.

We also use high quality heavy duty contoured buckles and fixings because we want our products to be as strong and well made as possible.

We take time and care to make sure every stitch is right. We don't use glue or other shortcuts, we aim to sew to perfection :)

Care instructions

All of our fabric harnesses and collars can be hand washed and should be dried flat. We have been known on occasion to throw them in the machine on a gentle cycle - no more than 30 degrees and no spin. If your harness or collar has metal hardware we recommend popping the item inside a wash bag or sock to prevent scratching.

Our settle mat/travel beds can we washed at 40 degrees, dried flat and ironed with a warm iron.

My dog is smaller/larger than your sizes, can you help?

Yes, we have a 2XS and 2XL size - these are available on request. The reason for this is that the 2XS size doesn't work with some of the bigger prints - so we like to advise customers on their choice of print. The 2XL may require bigger fixings depending on how strong and heavy your dog is - so we prefer to talk to customers about their dog's needs rather than offer something generic.

How do I know what size harness to buy for my dog?

The best (and only) way to know what the right size is for your dog, is to measure them. All you need to do is take two simple measurements, these are - their neck and chest.

Neck - you need to measure where you want the harness to sit, this is normally lower than where they'd wear a collar.

Chest - measure behind their front legs at the widest part of their body. The chest strap on harnesses is adjustable so you don't need to worry too much about getting this spot on.

Then have a look at our size charts - there's one in the photos of every listing and choose a size. If your dog is between sizes just drop us a note, as every harness is made to order it's easy to adjust the sizes.

If the harness doesn't fit what do I do?

We're happy to exchange items that don't fit, but really we'd prefer to get it right first time round. The only way we can do this is if you measure your dog, and if you're not sure get in touch with us so we can help advise you.

If you want an exchange then please contact us to ask for one, from there you will need to pay for shipping of the exchange item and send it back to us. Our address is on the back of the packaging, if you don't have it anymore just get in touch.
