About

Author and illustrator Mary Garcia opens her first Etsy store, SilhouetteSentiments

I am the author of the children's book, "Boo-Boo's New Leg: A True Story of Illness, Acceptance and Healing" which was my first experience as a self published author and illustrator.
It is the story of my best friend's experience with illness, amputative surgery and adjusting to her new life afterward.
More information on the book can be found on Facebook by typing in the the title of the book, or by going directly to my author website: www.marygarciabooks.com.

Through the magic of Facebook, I connected with an incredible surviver. I am currently illustrating my second children's book written by Jothy Rosenberg of Who Says I Can't, the book (also a page on Facebook) and the Youtube video series which is sure to become a network televised inspirational reality series very soon! Both published books deal with the process of illness, disability and positive problem solving and outlook.

Since my teens, I have learned to make things from my mother, Terry from whom I inherited my love of art and crafting. She taught me to hunt for treasure in yard sales. I taught her about thrift stores. She gave me a powerful intuition about the possibilities of redecorating objects and reusing them. As a child she sewed her own window curtains and altered some of her clothing too. I have been doing this with my own two kids. I enjoy decorating their rooms. It gives me chance to be that 7 yr old or that 14 yr old again.
My husband Joe, works diligently as a custodian for our school district so I can be home with our children, my Mother, my Father (who just passed from cancer on 12/28/13, may he rest in peace), my mother's best friend who I also take care of, and work from home on the book and the things I love.

My outdoor projects become just as important as my professional illustrating, illustrating and crafting. I created a walk through fairy tale type garden from scratch. Every year it morphs a little more and ultimately it lead to the creation of a permanent miniature fairy village with perennial plants, rocks, and other natural and crafted items under my kids' swing set.

********When one of my cousins got married I began working on her wedding programs and that was when the silhouette paintings became a big part of my creative process. I began making personalized silhouette portraits of several couples as keepsake wedding gifts, because I was financially challenged. I found that they really cherished them so I began working with children's silhouettes and then botanicals, animals, vintage items, movie characters and so on.

During the rise of the Zombie craze, I even got the idea to zombify my teen son in a graphic oil pastel drawing surrounded by ripped, burned newspaper clippings as a border. Yes, I can sometimes step outside the box that I've built for myself creatively. Everyone on Facebook wanted me to do the same to them. However, even though I received a few commissions for silhouette work, the requests quickly stopped and I found it wasn't much of a place to shop, but just to look.

Another cousin introduced me to the Etsy community as a shopper and since then, I've been in awe of the creative and supportive vibe on this site of stores. She nudged me to become a seller and I finally decided to take the plunge. Thanks Diane.

Art has always been at the forefront of my life and it honors me to share some of it here, with you.
