Mother and daughter chandlers, sharing our passion.

About Silva House:

We are a mother and daughter who appreciate a good candle. That said, we used to spend a good amount of money every month on this indulgence. We found scents we liked, but we found that candles were either incredibly expensive or not at all forthcoming about things that are important to us, like being cruelty free. It wasn’t until the daughter half of our partnership said, “why don’t we just make them ourselves, so then we get exactly what we want, how we want,” that we did exactly that.

We started sharing our work with friends and family. We were often asked if we ever intended to sell our candles, because our loved ones wanted to share them with their loved ones too. Truth be told, we enjoyed the whole candle making process and were turning out more product than we could reasonably use, so we gave this some thought. With a corner of our kitchen already dedicated to chandlery (and with college tuition looming on the not so distant horizon), we decided that maybe starting a cottage industry business would be a good idea.

We believe in creating a cruelty free, sustainable, and organic product, and that luxury items should be in everyone's reach. We create our candles and tarts in small batches here in our home in the Pacific Northwest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to take care of my candle?

With minimal effort, there are simple things you can do to prolong the life and quality of your candle. Before you light your candle, always trim the wick to ¼ inch and remove any debris left in the wax pool such as wick trimmings or matches. Burn for a minimum of one hour, maximum of four hours at a time. Keep flame away from moving air.

Why is trimming the wick important?

Wicks that are left long or crooked can cause uneven burning, dripping, flaring, and sooting. Trimming wicks will help prolong the life of your candle. Your candles will burn up to 25% longer if you trim the wick before every use.

To trim our wicks, we use a pair of embroidery scissors, but anything sharp (even nail clippers) will work. Amazon sells a variety of wick trimmers if you want something dedicated and a little more formal.

Why is a minimum burn time important?

The first burn of your candle is the most important. Candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual candle size. For example, a candle that is 2 inches across should burn for 2 hours, or until the melt pool covers the top of the candle to its edges. If a candle is not burned for long enough to allow the wax to liquefy or to melt from edge to edge of the container, it will create a “memory ring.” Once a candle has a “memory ring,” it will continue to tunnel for the life of the candle.

Why is the maximum burn time recommended?

Burning a candle for too long will cause carbon to collect on the wick, leading it to “mushroom.” The wick will then become unstable and produce a dangerously large flame. It will even start to smoke and release soot.

Burn for no longer than 4 hours at a time.

Why should I keep my candle away from moving air?

Avoid proximity to fans, air conditioners, open windows, or crowded areas with people walking back and forth. Moving air can disturb the flame, resulting in those pesky black marks on the container.

How should I store my candle if I don't want to use it for an extended period of time?

Store candles in a cool, dark, and dry place with the lid on (if applicable) to keep them clean of dust and debris and to help protect the wax and fragrance. Highly fragrant candles have a life span of 1-2 years, depending on the scent.

What is so great about soy candles, anyway?

Soy candles are a vegetable-based product, while paraffin candles are a petroleum-based one. Soy burns longer than paraffin by 35-50% (at a rate of approximately 7 hours per ounce) and burn cleanly without producing soot or leaving particulates in the air.
The soy we use is organic and American grown. It is a renewable resource that is completely biodegradable and nontoxic. That is a lotta good stuff right there.

How long do soy candles burn?

We have found that soy burns at a rate of approximately 7 hours per ounce. This definitely varies. (On test burns of our candles, our 3 oz candle burned for 29 hours, our 7 oz candle burned for 52 hours!)

Why is my candle smoking?

This usually occurs when carbon builds up on the wick. To avoid this, make sure you trim the wick to 1/4 inch prior to every burn.

Do you accommodate custom order requests?

Absolutely! We will fill anything (if it is safe) with wax and a wick! We are also happy to customize labels or offer discounts on bulk orders for weddings, showers, or any kind of party. Email us at for more information! We will also create custom scent profiles on request.

Are your candles cruelty free?

100%. We will not buy products that do not guarantee they do not undergo animal testing.
