It just sort of happened...

My father and I took an interest in kiltmaking a number of years back and this progressed to kilt pins. Around 2008 my father and I started designing a range of kilt pins (he, being a trained artist, drew the designs for the original concepts which came from both of us, and together we refined the ideas). It developed from there: we made a number of prototypes from brass sheet, piercing, hammering, etching, engraving etc and a small number of finished products in silver and bronze.

The process so far has really been slow-burn, with my father and I moving things forward gradually in our spare time. We have a large range of designs in our portfolio, some only on paper, others rough prototypes and some models ready for casting. My father is not involved in the production stage, only design and prototype, and is less involved now, although we continue to discuss ideas and designs some new pins. We also plan, once things are moving more, to introduce a range of kilt-belt buckles.

The original concepts came mainly from Scottish clan crests. The idea was to design a range of kilt pins which had some sort of link or reference to a clan crest or clan link. For example, castles, bulls, flaming torches often appear in clan crests, so we designed a kilt pin based on each idea. The idea behind the range is that someone wanting to wear a kilt pin with a link to their clan, but who doesn't want the standard "sword with clan crest" kilt pin found in so many kilt shops might like our designs. Other concepts also came from a variety of other sources - old stone carvings, viking links etc.

Many of the designs are largely pictorial, with a lot of detail and we felt it wasn't viable to do some of them as entirely handmade items at a reasonable selling price, so we decided that some designs should be cast. In order to produce the best models we could for casting (as some of the prototype etching and engraving was a bit rough), I created some of the designs in vector graphics and we had the designs photo-etched onto a bronze plate - by a sign-making company - which we then cut out and used as the as casting models, applying some texture to those that required it. This took us up until around January 2014 (when I selected 6 designs (4 from the photo-etched models and 2 handmade models) to have cast by Wallis Hunter (now Jewellery Casting Scotland), a small jewellery-making and casting company in Argyll, Scotland. I've had a couple small batches cast so far in bronze and silver. The raw castings come back to me and I remove the sprues, tidy up the edges, polish the surfaces as necessary and then solder on the hinges and catches. I then apply a patina to them and give them a final polish as necessary, give them a protective wax coating and attach the pins.

Because of some of the practical skills I would need to develop for the kilt pin work, I took an evening class in jewellery making in spring 2014 and devoured a series of excellent online tutorials (which I regularly go back to for new instalments). Since then I have been experimenting with handmade jewellery and developing a range of items for sale, mainly earrings and other ladies' jewellery, though I am starting to introduce some other men's jewellery too. I work in an extremely limited workspace and still lack most of the heavier equipment required for an efficient workshop, but I have a sufficient collection of tools to get by with and add to it whenever I can.

All silver items are sold and described in accordance with the UK Hallmarking Act 1973.
