Announcement   Love chains? Love chainmaille jewelry? Know someone who loves chainmaille jewelry or just handmade jewelry? Shop now for that special someone (or for yourself *wink*) and get 25% off the entire Etsy shop. I strive to make my creations a blend of both traditional and original, which often means I’m using traditional chainmaille patterns in original ways, my own original weaves in traditional pieces, and also doing mixed metal traditional pieces or micromaille (22g or 24g rings).

Custom requests are very welcome, whether you want a simple pair of earrings or your own elaborate and intricate statement piece. A piece can be totally self-designed by yourself (with a simple yes or no from me on whether it will work) or I can help guide you through the choices of metals, weaves, gauge sizes, and more with my experience as a chainmailler and chain jewelry artist.

Special Black Friday through Cyber Monday sale! It was a distinct pleasure to work with Kathleen from the Silver Tabby Studios in designing this Abhainn Chainmaille bracelet. Kathleen was very responsive to all my questions; provided great ideas and suggestions throughout the design process; adhered to the schedule proposed for assembly; remained within the original cost estimate; and provided a final piece of jewelry that exceeded expectations as to quality and craftsmanship. I highly recommend Silver Tabby Studios to others who are looking for unique and well made jewelry. I would not hesitate to purchase again.

This is a very unique pair of earrings which display a high degree of craftsmanship and creativity. Better yet, they wear well and look great! Item received was as described, well packaged and delivered in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Silver Tabby Studios to others who are looking for quality crafted jewelry.

About

One little gift card started it all...

I have always had an artistic soul, enjoying art class in school and sewing as a hobby, but I never really felt entirely comfortable with "free-hand" work, such as drawing, painting, wire-wrapping, etc. Then one year a friend gave me a gift card to A.C. Moore for Christmas and when I went to the store to spend it, I happened to wander down the jewelry aisle where a beginner’s book on chainmaille caught my eye. Upon paging through it, I realized that not only was this interesting, but that I totally understood all of the directions, diagrams, and pictures. I used that gift card to buy the book, a bag of cheap practice rings, and went home to dig some pliers out of the household toolbox.
Nowadays, my tools are better quality and more specialized and I use a magnifying headset to help see the ring closures better. In addition to the more traditional chainmaille jewelry that I consider industry standards, I also create unique, never-before-seen designs inspired by the inherent properties of the weaves themselves (there are over 1000 different weaves in the international database), the work of fellow chainmaille artists, and sometimes just playing around with different chains or batches of rings. I feel that I have finally found a field where I can stretch my artistic wings in the form of the boundaries set by the math and spatial relations involved with weaving together lots of little metal rings made out of wire.
Since that momentous day of initial discovery, my interest has turned into a small home-based jewelry business, with sales online via Etsy and during the spring, summer, and fall I exhibit at various weekend arts and crafts shows in Pennsylvania and in surrounding states. My work space is generally my dining room table (which also doubles as a computer desk), but I am usually found carrying a work bag of pliers and rings around in the hopes of snitching some jewelry work time during lunch breaks, family functions, staffing the booth, etc.
I got my show start at the Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show in August of 2010, when I was selected to be one of 10 Emerging Artists. I generally prefer to exhibit at the juried art shows, submitting photos of my orginial designs to a panel of fellow artists to be selected for the show, where both patrons and fellow artists appreciate my unique take on an ancient craft and my attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Some of the various shows and events that I have exhibited at in the past include: Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show, Yorkfest Arts Festival, West Reading Arts on the Avenue, Scranton Arts on Fire, Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire FlavorFest, Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire Celtic Fling, and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Fine Craft Fairs (Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia) (Wilmington, Delaware) (Blue Bell, PA) (Lancaster, PA).
When I exhibit at the arts and crafts shows, I am usually joined by my intrepid Mother-in-Law, Carol, who has been invaluable help with getting the business up and running and also helping out at the shows with booth staffing, setup/breakdown, and transportation.

Welcome to Silver Tabby Studios. My shop offers top quality hand crafted chainmaille jewelry and items (with the occasional sewing or quilting project thrown in for spice), all designed and/or created by myself in my home studio in Marietta, Pennsylvania, USA. My jewelry-making skills are entirely self-taught, learned from various tutorials, books, and kits made by big name artisans and designers in the chainmaille community, with a little bit of experimentation and lots of repetition needed to perfect everything. I love what I do and challenge myself to continually get better at my craft.

I have been making jewelry for the past two years, with a number of original designs to my credit. I am inspired by my surroundings, playing around with the limits of different weaves, other artisan’s work, specific beads or ornamentation, and occasionally adapting classic jewelry designs to chainmaille.

Chainmaille as an industry is much the same as it was during the medieval ages. There have been some lovely advances in the tools used and the making of the jump rings used to form the chainmaille, but at the core of it, the weaving of all the rings to form a coherent whole piece has stayed much the same. Every ring that goes into a piece has to pass through my pliers at least once to be opened or closed, in order to be woven into a piece. This can make for many hours, or even days worth of work put in on a single piece.

Thanks for looking and have a wonderful day! :)

Additional policies and FAQs
I make both high quality and fashion jewelry and I strive to make all of my customers happy. If you have questions about a piece or would like to request a custom item, please, please, PLEASE don’t hesitate to convo me and I’ll do my best to answer any questions or accommodate any requests.

Materials:
I work with a variety of both base and precious metals, as well as both hand made and commercially available components such as beads, focals, and findings (clasps, headpins, etc.). If you have any questions about a piece that is not answered in the item listing or would like further clarification, please convo me and I will do my best to answer everything. I am also completely honest about what I do and do not know about the materials used in a component, what are the pro and cons of the metals that I am using in the piece, potential difficulties in either caring for or wearing the item(s), etc. If you have any concerns, please convo me and I will do my best to give you all the facts needed to make an informed decision and/or give my advice on your situation, especially in cases of metal allergies and/or intolerances.

Base Metals:
• Aluminum
• Jeweler’s Brass
• Copper
• Niobium (considered mostly hypoallergenic)
• Bronze
• Stainless Steel (considered mostly hypoallergenic)
• Titanium (considered the only true 100% hypoallergenic metal)

Precious Metals (generally as a group considered mostly hypoallergenic):
• Yellow Gold-Fill
• Palladium White Gold-Fill (recommended for people with nickel sensitivity)
• Fine Silver (99.9% pure silver)
• Sterling Silver (92.5% silver)
• Argentium Sterling Silver
• Palladium Sterling Silver
• Platinum Sterling Silver
• 18K Yellow Gold
• 18K Rose/Red Gold
• 18K Pink Gold
• 18K Green Gold
• 18K Palladium White Gold (recommended for people with nickel sensitivity)

Piece Adjustments:
Due to the nature of chainmaille, many pieces/items can be tailored or readjusted to fit a particular wearer or made to be a particular length. Generally, if I have the rings and/or materials readily available, I can either add or subtract up to one inch in length of the item without further cost to the buyer if the piece is readily adjustable. For adjustments of more than one inch, the final price of the piece will be based on further adjustment of the materials used and the time and effort involved for me to make the necessary changes.

Some items, however, due to the nature of the weave used or the particular piece itself, cannot be adjusted without either massive or total disassembly of the piece. If you are unsure whether or not an item can be readily adjusted, please convo me and I can let you know. If the piece cannot be readily adjusted, we can convo further and work out whether reworking the current item or building an entirely new piece will be needed and/or more cost effective for you, the purchaser.

Listing Availability:
On occasion, especially weekends from late spring all the way into mid-autumn, I will be exhibiting my wares at venues such as the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, local arts & crafts markets or shows, festivals, and juried art shows. When this happens, since my entire inventory travels with me, I will inactivate the listings for all major pieces (necklaces, bracelets, matched sets, and unique earrings) at the start of the event and then reactivate the listings for any pieces that have not sold upon the event’s closing. If you’ve had your eye on a particular piece and would like to purchase it but the listing has been inactivated for the show, please contact me via my cell phone (717) 917-4653 immediately in order to let me know, and I can tell you whether the piece has sold yet. If it hasn’t, I will reserve the piece and/or pull it from display for the rest of the show. As a courtesy for this action, I request that you purchase the piece immediately upon reactivation of the listing.

Shows/Personal Appearances:
I attend juried and non-juried art shows and festivals throughout the eastern seaboard of the continental United States. If you are curious or would like to see my work in person, please convo me and I can let you know my current show schedule at the time, or you can check the Silver Tabby Studios Facebook page to get informal updates, directions, or a better idea of where my stand will be located at the event.

Custom Items:
If you see an item you like, but wish it were in a different color, metal, etc., feel free to either request a custom item or convo me to get price quotes, an idea of availability or feasibility, timeline, etc.

For all precious metal custom items (silver, sterling silver, gold, and gold-fill), at least half of the estimated final price will be due immediately via accepted payment methods to facilitate funding of the materials needed to begin work on the piece. In the case of solid gold, my supplier orders the wire only as needed and the price for the rings is based on that current day’s market value. The supplier will give me a price quote that is only good for 24 hours, so I will need a contact phone number in order to reach you immediately to authorize and facililtate the purchase of the materials. The down payment (half the estimated final cost) for materials purchase of solid gold, due to the exorbitant price of gold these days, will need to be done immediately upon authorization of purchase, which means checks/money orders will not be accepted for the initial down payment, since my supplier will only order the materials upon cleared payment for the purchase.

Any custom item that uses made-to-order rings (odd-shaped wire, palladium/platinum sterling silver, solid gold), will take up to four to six weeks to complete since my supplier can take up to 10 business days to receive the materials, make the rings, and ship everything to me.

**I welcome wholesale orders so please feel free to convo me to request wholesale rates, availability, etc.
