The Story of Singing Cat Creations & Catherine

My story begins in the beautiful hills of Oregon. Having lived in many places across the US, Oregon is my favorite with its sparkling rivers and waterfalls, mountain peaks, rolling hills and sweet ocean breezes. Its simple beauty soothes my soul, and brings a little bit of heaven here on earth. It is where I find inspiration for my creative muse.

Why Singing Cat Creations? I believe God graces each of us with creative gifts if we but take the time to find it! And nothing makes us all happier than working on things we love… and if one can earn money along the way, it is a match made in heaven!

God has given me the gift of music too! I write, record and sing my own line of lullabies, Christmas and toddler albums. I believe music is “love made audible,” and my craft creations are a delightful extension of “love made for the soul and eyes.” Since my name is often shortened to “Cat” and I have two dearly loved kitties, Bella and Bailey, Singing Cat Creations reflects the gifts God has blessed me with and speaks to both my nickname and “babies.”

Since the late 1970’s, family and friends have received handmade gifts for holidays, birthdays and weddings. My macramé creations from that time still hang in many homes, and all have loved my Christmas angels on their sparkling trees, mantles and doors.

I originally began selling my “mop-soft” angels to help promote my kids music line. Little did I know how sought after they would become. In my little corner of each craft fair, customers were drawn in by the sweet sounds of music, and fell in love with the beautiful angels dancing on my tree.

At first, I made angels in four colors: cream, white, burgundy and forest green. That changed with my most memorable sale one frosty November at a large fair in Portland. A young woman had recently lost her beloved grandmother, who was a collector of pink angels. She wanted to special order pale pink angel ornaments to honor her memory, and to give one to her sister for Christmas. I was so touched by her story, I sent extra angels with her order. She came by my booth the following year to give me a tearful hug and to see what was new. I now make angels in a rainbow of colors.

Life tends to take an unexpected road in life, and gives us pause to reflect. In the fall of 2011, my life drastically changed. I decided to keep faith, hope and optimism in my heart regardless of the outcome. I’ve always been a “glass half full” person, and found an optimistic outlook can go a long way!

I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). While I am not diabetic, it has been a life-altering event. At the time of my diagnosis, my feet were so swollen from excess fluids that I couldn’t wear normal shoes. I called them “hobbit feet” because they were so big (my humor kicked in--- better than crying!). I began dialysis in January 2012, and have been on dialysis since then.

In January of 2017, another serious event occurred. A blood infection had infected my right heart valve, causing it to open. I now know the true meaning of “sick as a dog!” It resulted in a heart valve surgery to replace it at the tender age of 57.

The good news is I lost the last of the weight needed to go on the transplant list (not the recommended method!), but must wait until a year from the heart surgery. The transplant testing phase begins in October/November 2017, where I will begin the next chapter of my journey. I’m now living the “good life” of retirement.

So I’ve pondered what to do with my free time when I’m not at dialysis, and perhaps make extra money along the way. While I am still working on new songs, I wanted to re-open my “angel factory.” So here I am on Etsy, where it's much easier on the old joints than setting up and tearing down a fair booth!

My illness has really brought to home how short life is. While I don’t know what the future will be as far as the ERSD is concerned, I choose to seek joyful moments in my “new normal” and fill my days with hope, humor and love, and share my creations as I continue on my journey. Life is a blessing no matter what path you travel, and I pray God will grace me with a new kidney so I can enjoy my little piece of heaven a bit longer.

I hope you love my handmade creations! May the spirit of Christmas fill your heart all year through.
