Announcement   I'm back from Jamballah NW and have some new items to list! Slowly but surely, I'm hoping to get them all listed by the end of the month. Costume bases in assorted sizes, a couple new skirts, small ikat & assuit zil bags, and a bit of jewelry. :)

Hey there and welcome to the Verdant Muse, home of hand-crafted fusion bellydance inspired adornment designed and made by Jillian Ordes-Finley. I also periodically feature work by my dear friend Brandy Grey (listed as the Vauntville line).

I have a part time job now on evenings & weekends, so please allow a little time to respond to messages, and if you need RUSH SHIPPING, PLEASE send me a direct message ON ETSY first to be sure I see and expedite your request- I get a phone notification from all direct messages on Etsy.

Yes, as you may have heard, I am quitting costuming full time and potentially retiring soon. I will post what I have time to make here in the shop and still plan to vend a couple times a year. Custom work is on hiatus and stock will be limited... grab things while you can! :) If you see something I made in the past you'd like me to recreate, please let me know and I'll see if I can make something similar to order.

CUSTOM WORK is currently on hiatus as I move away from costuming full time (sadface) but I will still keep producing mostly ready-to-ship items part time, or in my spare time. Message me if you have a proposal for an idea with no deadline (or a very far off one) and I can see what I can do accommodate it! I will also take requests if there are certain items you'd like to see in my shop.

For custom proposals please send me the following info:
-your name, and a little information about the performance
-contact info
-date your piece(s) would be needed
-what pieces and how many, ideas, inspiration & design parameters
-budget (bra/belt sets start at $600)

Please familiarize yourself with my full custom policies first to expedite the process (link: http://theverdantmuse.com/infoandupdates/). Also be ready to sign a contract stating you agree to these policies.

About

The Verdant Muse was born when Jillian collected beautiful fabrics and antique and tribal jewelry for her first costume and didn't want to stop.

The overall impression of a costume is where my ideas start, and often the materials inspire the direction of a costume. I really think about the impression they will give both up close and at a distance. I choose bold but feminine lines, and love to pile on on the pretty stuff! I often use layers and layers of lace, assuit, heavily tarnished tribal pieces, and antique bits and baubles. I also have a deep love and appreciation for things of India, so you will find lots of silks, brocades, trims, and embellishments with a Bollywood flair. My highest priority however, is sturdy and impeccable craftsmanship.

I grew up sewing and crafting, and learned from my mother, an expert seamstress, who in turn learned from my grandmother who sewed like a surgeon! She still, to this day, inspires me everyday. I have always found pattern sewing claustrophobic, preferring always to stitch by hand, improvise, and sculpt up unique pieces. And I loooove to alter thrift store finds and other slightly rough or off treasures!

I also understand this is the only planet we get, and try to incorporate that philosophy into every choice I make. I prefer local antique shops and estate sale lots on Ebay to bigbox craft stores. There are so many beautiful materials already on this planet not being used, and I do my best to hunt out totally unique gems. My goal is reduce my use of new fabric and materials as much as I can while still fulfilling the needs of my clients. Even a lot of my "new" materials are often bought second hand.

I've adopted a minimal waste policy in my studio- I save and reuse packing materials from supply deliveries, and make an effort not to throw ANYTHING away. When I ship as I use minimal packing, just enough to make sure your piece arrives safe and sound, and can be recycled, even the mailer. Even fabric scraps and thread waste are saved to stuff cushions and pillows. Last year I'm happy to report only 2 gallons of trash had to go the landfill for the whole year. :)

All of my feathers are cruelty free, and I go the extra step to talk with suppliers to find out EXACTLY where the feathers come from, how the birds live, and that they are not plucked. Most of the feathers are molted from happy free range birds that live in sanctuaries, and by buying them I help fund the sanctuaries.

My goal as an artist is to help a large community of performance and flamboyant types to feel as gorgeous as they are! My art doesn't really live until it's a part of YOUR performance!

Frequently asked questions

Pantaloons FAQ:

-Why is there no size small? The medium can easily be taken in at the waist elastic on any pair of M/L and then fit a small, just message me first. :)
-What about XXXL and larger? I don't make these sizes in ready to wear, but just about any size can be made to order, feel free to ask! Most saris are about 5 yards, which is plenty to work with!
-Do you take custom orders? Kinda sorta.. I order vintage saris so I'm limited to what suppliers have. Sometimes I find the perfect sari only to receive it and have it be stiff, scratchy, tearing, or otherwise unusable (even after talking with suppliers to prevent this problem :/). If you can keep an open mind to colors & patterns let's talk!

Custom and personalized orders

CUSTOM WORK is temporarily on hiatus, as I am likely to be moving away from full-time costuming. But, in my free time I plan to build up stock for occasional vending and love hearing requests on what you all wanna see in the shop and my vendor booth.

If you have a project with no deadline, or a very far off one (6 months or more), please feel free to send me a proposal, including:
-your name
-date your piece(s) would be needed
-what pieces and how many, ideas and design parameters
-budget

Read my full custom policies here before sending request: http://theverdantmuse.com/infoandupdates/

Please note that the average belt & bra set costs $700-750, and $600 is my minimum, and I'm not currently taking custom orders on small items.

Care instructions

Costume items should be spot cleaned ONLY and stored/transported with caution. You may hand wash them very gently and only occasionally. Please DO NOT dry clean them. :)

Vintage sari pants should be washed on the gentle cycle or hand washed in cold water + vinegar to prevent bleeding, and hung to dry. Portable steamers work great for removing any wrinkles, but they can also be ironed on med high heat (steam is ok).

Items made with new fabric (velvet skirts, stretch material & new silky prints) can be laundered as usual, though washing in cold water and hanging to dry is best.

Can I reserve an item?

If you are requesting an item or wish to reserve an item please be prepared to make a (25% or more, non-refundable) deposit/payment first. I cannot hold it for you until you can, apologies! :)

Once payments begin, you will have 90 DAYS by default to pay off your order, but be sure to CONTACT ME if you need an extension. This job is still my full time gig at the moment, and I just can't afford to wait, apologies!

What about repairs?

I do my best to make pieces as well as possible, but sometimes rings open, fabric tears, strands break, rhinestones fall out, the world is an imperfect place. I love the opportunity to fix things and make them right if things go awry. I'll charge a reasonable rate for fixes (minor ones are free) if you pay the shipping both ways. If it's my mistake, I'll cover all the expenses. I stand by my work and my reputation! :)
