What is Skölland?

Skölland (Sk-ohl-and)-distinctive, beautifully dark wearable art that puts your Personality in Metal. A brand for those who want their jewelry to reflect their creativity, alternative style & individuality.

Skölland was created to be a haven for those who want quality pieces but cannot stand the look and style of traditional fine jewelry. The word “Skolland” is a term coined by the owner, Claire Steckel. The inspiration for the word came from the old Norse interjection “skål” (an interjection commonly used to toast the good health of someone, or a phrase used in celebration- typically meaning ”cheers”)
Claire wanted the name to embody the elation she felt when she was finally able to communicate her unique style through crafted pieces. The jewelry not only resembled her, but it also reflected the strength required to challenge the status quo of traditional jewelry. Her design & inspirations for Skölland stem from history, European & Nordic cultures, rugged textures and a style known as “brutalism”. When meshed together, these ideas create a style that is distinctly Skölland.

Skölland is a woman-owned, grassroots business that was built from the ground up. Skölland’s roots were first planted in Claire’s first business, “Claire’s Creative Designs' ” which she ran from 2015-2019. Each piece of equipment used for jewelry making was sourced one at a time, building the business slowly from resilience, dedication & hard work. Currently, all pieces are either hand fabricated or cast in Claire’s home-based studio located in Wisconsin. Each sterling & gold alloy used is carefully selected for each design to produce a quality piece .Improving technique & maintaining or exceeding quality are core values that Skolland embodies. Claire focuses on R&D on days she is not fulfilling orders, striving to improve on the processes for her made-to-order lines and experimenting with new designs .
Skolland is here to stay for those, like Claire, who have struggled to find themselves in a piece of jewelry. You can’t be defined by simple words on a bracelet, or a common chain. Jewelry is an extension of you and is deeply personal-life’s too short to settle for jewelry that just doesn’t communicate you . Are you ready to challenge the status quo, and put your Personality In Metal ?

Skal!

-Claire

About the Artist:

Metalsmith & one-woman-show- Claire was born in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout her childhood, she lived in different states in the Midwest, East Coast, and the Southern United States, never settling in one place for too long. Being neurodivergent, one of Claire's biggest struggles has been communicating with others. She struggled to find common ground with others her age while growing up because she had many interests that were deemed atypical. Through jewelry making, she discovered that jewelry can be used as a form of communication. Making it a medium for conveying her individual style and harnessing it to tell her customer's stories.

When Claire was in her late teens, she stumbled upon a beading shop within walking distance of her first apartment that ignited her interest in jewelry making. Realizing early on that beading was limiting and couldn’t create the designs she dreamed of, she spent years teaching herself metalsmithing techniques and working under master goldsmiths to learn how to bring her ideas to life. As a part-time hobby turned full-time career, Claire now forges and designs everything in her home studio using traditional and innovative metalsmithing techniques.

In her spare time, she can be found foraging, cooking, reading & playing the piano.

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

Some of my most popular pieces are available on Faire.com in quantities of 6 or more. If you're interested in placing a wholesale order directly please reach out to me here, or via email- claire@skollandjewelry.com

Payment Plans

I am happy to set up a payment plan that fits your budget & pay schedule should you need it. Payment plans can be arranged for any item listed for sale in my shop, or custom orders.

Craftsmanship

All of my items are handcrafted, designed, cast, fabricated & finished from my home studio. Because I care deeply about the quality of my products, and the importance of working with certain alloys-I do not outsource any of my work. All metals and alloys used in my work are high quality, sourced from the US or UK, and made from recycled materials.

Here's a list of my favorite silver purities & alloys to work with:

•935- Sterlium Plus & Argentium Silver. Argentium is my go-to metal, it is more durable than traditional sterling & is more tarnish resistant.
•950- Platilite Silver & Continuum silver. These contain platinum or palladium, a luxurious silver option.
•925- Traditional sterling- for reticulated pieces & certain patterns only.

Can I get this made in Gold?

Yes! I have experience working with a wide range of gold & silver alloys-I can make any listing in my Etsy shop from your choice of gold. ( 10k-22k)
Please send me a message to make arrangements for purchasing if you'd like to have something made in your desired karat or alloy.

Care instructions

All jewelry purchased from my shop arrives with care instructions & an information card detailing the purity and characteristics of the metal.

Are your stones natural or treated?

All of my stones are 100% natural unless otherwise noted. It will be stated in the description of an item if a stone is heat treated, dyed, stabilized, or otherwise altered from its natural state. I prefer to use completely natural stones in my jewelry, so treated stones are rare in my shop. If you have any further questions about a particular stone, please feel free to message me.

Custom Orders

Due to my current workload, I only take custom orders January-October 15th of each calendar year. Starting in 2023 all custom orders start at $350- the final price is determined by the complexity, weight, material, and overall time needed to complete the design. Custom orders are very time-consuming and rewarding because I get to work with you 1 on 1 to make sure your dream piece is everything you'd hope it to be.

Custom order requests can be submitted year-round, I will review your request and respond within 1-2 business days if it is a project I can work on you with. If it is something that is out of my scope, I will recommend other businesses who might be able to take on your project.

Will the patina on my jewelry change over time

Yes-there are no permanent patinas. Your finish will change with time.

I use 2 different types of patina in my work- Liver of sulfur (aka LOS, it's a traditional option commonly used among jewelers) and a proprietary lacquer-like patina that I developed. ( not available to other jewelers)

LOS patina will have the patina sealed with renaissance wax to help preserve the finish, depending on how you handle your jewelry this patina will likely change over time making it unique to the wearer. LOS can be reapplied at any time for a small fee.

The LP finish resembles rhodium/gold plating in terms of longevity. It will gradually wear away revealing the silver beneath. Like LOS, this finish can be reapplied for a small refinishing fee.

HELP! I ordered the wrong ring size, can you resize the ring for me?

All bands listed in my shop can either be resized by me, or by a jeweler close to you who is willing to work on them.

My rates for resizing are $35 + shipping, and resizing can take about a week from the time the ring arrives back to me. Please contact me prior to sending a ring back for resizing.

The only band in my shop that I do not recommend resizing down, or sizing up more than 1/2 a size is the Thistle & Highland Interlace ring. This is not due to the material, but due to the pattern. If you resize these bands it alters the pattern, by either removing a segment or adding smooth material. If you need a smaller size, or more than a half size larger than the original please contact me for an exchange provided the ring is unengraved.

What ring sizes to you make?

I can make any size between 1-16 ( US/CA sizes) for you. If you are from out of the country, I can provide a conversion table so you know which size will be the best fit for you.

The ring mandrels used in my shop are the TruSize brand. The jewelry industry does not require mandrels to be calibrated or consistent in sizing- this brand is one of the few companies that calibrate their mandrels for consistency and accuracy.

If you are unsure of your ring size, I can always mail you a ring size or you can go to a local jeweler to be sized. Just remember that there might be a small size difference between their sizes and mine depending on what brand they use.
