About smallandgreat

On Etsy since 2013

I grew up in a family of artists and crafters, but did not truly find my niche until I learned to crochet in 2011. My mom taught me the basic stitches, and I simply took off -- it was like my hands had been waiting my whole life to do this. Growing up, I was an avid artist, and hoped to follow in the footsteps of my graphic designer dad. In college, I caught the web 1.0 bug, learned HTML, and dove into blogging. Post-graduation, I moved to New York City, where I worked briefly but memorably in advertising, and then for years as a magazine editor (accessories and beauty).

Looking to make a major change, I moved out west -- even though I'd never been to California before! I went back to school, and discovered that I love teaching. I was also able to put my writing skills to good use, coauthoring a book. But I found that there were many aspects of my work that gave me pause -- I didn't want to "advance the discipline," or wrestle with university bureaucracy.

It was while working through all of my graduate school issues (and nearly all of a PhD) that I caught the fiber bug. I quickly jumped from granny squares to amigurumi to Tunisian crochet, and I filled my friends' and family members' homes with crocheted goodness. Within a year, I'd started designing my own patterns (some of which I sell here, and a few of which you can find for free on Ravelry -- just search Kate Wood).

Everything you'll find in my shop is 100% handmade by me, from my own original patterns. I am always trying to come up with new things to stitch -- if there's something you've always wanted to see crocheted (or never realized you wanted to see crocheted 'til now), message me! I love, love, love custom orders.

I'm hopelessly devoted to yarn, my husband, my dogs, greener living, crafting, and all things vintage. Mainly a self-taught fiber artist, I design all of the patterns for the items I make. A New Englander by birth, I've become a die-hard Californian.

Hey, thanks for looking! I'm Kate, I love to crochet, and I'd LOVE to crochet something just for you (or for someone you love!).

This shop represents the fruit of many of my interests, ideas, and passions. I have been blessed with family members and many friends who are crafters and artisans, and not only am I proud to be among them -- I LOVE the stuff they've made for me over the years. Handmade items tell a story, and they have a way of becoming a part of your life. They retain something of the maker, and also something of the giver. My goal is to create little bits and pieces that will find a place in your life through the years.

All of the items for sale are handmade (crocheted, embellished, embroidered, and so on) by ME, from patterns I design myself. Each piece is going to be a little bit different from another -- even if I'm working the same pattern using the same yarn, you'll likely encounter the kinds of subtle variations that are part of the territory when it comes to buying handmade. Items made with hand-dyed yarn may have even more variation in color, so I try to provide big, beautiful photos to let you know what you're getting.

Thanks for checking out my shop -- I hope you'll see something that's small AND great!

Returns and exchanges
I try to post images of my creations that are as true to life possible, but please note that computer monitors aren't always consistent when it comes to displaying color. Varying color will occur with items that are made with hand-dyed yarn -- please look carefully at the photos for these items, which document what kind of variation you can expect.

Please also be sure to review the item measurements given in the description. Most measurements are given with the item folded flat -- if you are not sure whether an item will fit, measure a similar item you own for comparison, or convo me with your measurements.

HAND-DYED ITEMS: Please note care instructions! There are four different steps in my dyeing process that are JUST for stabilizing and setting the dye, but I cannot guarantee that hand-dyed items will be 100% colorfast. Please follow the care instructions given!

If you are unsure about anything before you purchase, please just be in touch! I’ll gladly answer any questions that you have.

That said...

If you are unhappy with your purchase or think something has gone awry, please CONTACT ME within 7 days of receipt of the item before leaving feedback. I will do my best to reasonably resolve any issues that you may have. If we are unable to reach a satisfactory resolution, I will accept a return of the item (minus all shipping fees), providing the item is returned in the same condition as it was originally sent.

Thank you!
I accept payment via Etsy direct checkout. Please remit payment upon purchase. This includes custom orders!

Sales tax will be collected from CALIFORNIA residents -- after all, we need our freeways and schools and stuff!
For made to order items, please allow 7-10 business days for me to create your purchase. You will be notified as soon as it ships.
