About

Good Humor Girl Also Does Good For Animals

I have had several creative careers, including apparel and interior design, so I can honestly say that no matter what I've done, I have pursued an artistic life. But, nearing 40, I found that I had never actually used my fine art education and time was wasting...One day I turned to a friend at the furniture store where I worked as a design consultant and said, "You know, I just wanted to paint murals!"...and sell art and creative ephemera for a living! So, when the company eventually went out of business, I took that opportunity to put every last dime I had to continue my education and become a decorative painter. This way I could continue to make people's homes beautiful and create art. It was during this pursuit that I met Michel Nadai, the premier craftsman of France and with him I studied the art of trompe l'oeil. I had found a niche where I could incorporate interior design and fine art! My business was just ramping up when the market changed suddenly and decorative painting was a luxury that people were putting off. Business waned. By 2008, not wanting to go back to work for someone else, I decided to pursue a fine art career, and began selling my art and custom portraits online and locally in festivals.

After I opened my shop on Etsy, I became a lot more active in my local community as a whole. As a self-employed artist, I embraced the handmade movement and it's ideology. I found the concept of living green to be so perfectly suited for a handmade artisan like me, since I can buy and sell locally and also support the community around me, its businesses, farms, people and animals! I try whenever possible to purchase locally made products, and raw materials. It just the green thing to do!

I named my art studio Smelly Rhino after an obvious adoration of animals, and as a reflection of my patented silliness. But, I thought if I could help endangered species with my art, that would be a cool bonus! Over time, I have become more actively involved in supporting local animal shelters for the critters around me in need. It has become one of my missions.

I have been donating money to pet causes for years and I'm affiliated with Art for Critters, a group of artists who regularly donate to the animal welfare charities of their choice. The running tally of funds raised is on their website and I'm proud to be part of that group! Look for A4C in listing titles here on Etsy and elsewhere to find more Art For Critters supporting artists. http://www.artforcritters.net/artists.htm

In my shop you will find lots of animals, large and small, custom pet portraits, illustrations and an abundance of silliness. In fact, silly is my specialty! Ask me to do some for you if you like! of course, I will always paint the posh pose, too! I just want to make people happy with my art.

Thanks for your effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.

I have always followed some creative path; apparel design, interior design, music, but I didn't start painting for a living until 2006, when I couldn't quiet the voice any longer! 8 yrs later, I'm making art and selling worldwide. Life is good.
