Wearing my new covers on my new Moxi setup for park skating and they look fab. Have had a couple falls already on park concrete and they've held up/held in place. A few threads have come loose due to damage but it doesn't seem to have impacted overall integrity of the toe guards. Look forward to testing these more on indoor and outdoor ramps this weekend.

Busting my fingers to save all the toes.

When I started playing roller derby I became obsessed with toe guards. I really liked all the fun designs I found online, but really wanted something unique and something that I could make. I'm a fiber crafter: I sew, crochet, and knit. A few league mates had some knitted/crocheted toe guards, but they looked ragged and just weren't holding up. I especially become obsessed with protecting a huge investment I made in my brand new skates. I started experimenting with different yarns and materials and playing with the design for a better fitting guard. I found the design but lacked the material. I gave it up and bought some cute leather guards. They were cute, they protected my skate, but they were loose and the design was wearing off. Then one day perusing through a craft store I came upon some cording that was used for macrame, and then some other cording in the yarn section that my husband recognized as a type of paracord. Paracord is many nylon cords bound into one. It's strong and becomes stronger when you braid or knot it. Crochet + Paracord = crazy strong material.
I made some toe guards out of it and gave a few pairs away to people in my league. A month or two later those league mates were coming back and raving about how well they fit AND held up. "They self heal! Look!" Instead of breaking down and fraying or wearing away to nothing, they material was binding itself together even more! Skaters from outside the league were asking about them, but no business card or webpage to send them. I had no time to make those things happen, let alone make more guards.
Then I hurt myself during a bout. In a cast, sit on your butt, can't skate, hurt myself. I had loads of time to do the research, market, and make a business out of a little idea.
So here I am, introducing my design to the derby world! Please like my Facebook Page and follow me on Instagram to see what comes out next.
I'd also like to give mad props to Anime to Skateboards - our local derby shop that offered to sell these for me. If you are local to southeastern Michigan and play derby, they have EVERYTHING you need! Also make the skate selection and fitting a breeze.
