About

Andrew Shengelia and Elena Lunetskaya

Andrew Shengelia and Elena Lunetskaya, Russian artists from St. Petersburg have been working together for almost ten years. Elena has got a classical art education of an academic school in one of the oldest St. Petersburg Universities. Andrew is an ethnic Georgian from a family of professional filmmakers (father - cinematographer, mother - photographer at the studio), many years ago, came from a tropical Batumi to a dull and overcast northern city, reminiscing about the sea and the villages of his small homeland, keeping traditions of the ancient Colchis.

During the period of collaboration the pair developed its own style of painting, which has grown from two distinctive national schools. Their painting style art critics often call Associative Impressionism. Despite the fact that the artists live in St. Petersburg, a city of Dostoevsky, rich in its historical and artistic traditions, their art absolutely lacks traditional aesthetics of Russian classics and the City. Psychedelic villages, fields and flowers, ambiguous, out-of-body and strange – that is what we can see in there, the dreams of a city dweller, drugged with industrial smog.

Dynamic of the surroundings, transmitted with broad textured brush strokes, forming its own pictorial substance and elegant neglecting of the details, creating its own visual range - all this brings their pictures to the firm-painting colorful Georgian conventions, recalling theater sets, quilts and national ornaments, while not devoid of the classical three-dimensional environment. The landscapes do not have geographical origin, being only a shadow of the real terrain, cinematic replica. And southern seascapes and lush green meadows and unusual flowers are so atypical for Northern Petersburg. Georgian colors faded on the north wind, cold northern impressionism got Caucasian sound - heavy mosaic texture surprises with impressionistic ease in transferring space without acquiring any austere grandeur of the Russian classics, no bright decorative art of the peoples of the Caucasus. There is a special mysticism in the inaccessible villages on the horizon, clouds movement and rumpled grass. There is no drama in these paintings, but a special feeling of peace and expectations. Complicatedly woven brush strokes provide a continuous movement of air, water, grass, swaying flowers. This world is real and conventional at the same time, leaving space for personal images and memories, as the surface of Solaris or the worlds of Andrei Tarkovsky films, referring to the unconscious child visions. An endless road to the forgotten horizons, unexplored paths, distant past, the edge of the earth. It is a journey to a planet uninhabited by man, cobbled together from vague memories come alive on faded photos and amateur videos.
