Minimal, playful, pure silver jewelry. Sonemade for you.

about Sone

Sone is hands in Korean. Catherine Kim creates handmade jewelry art conceptualized from various sources such as everyday shapes, nature, memories, movements. Following traditional art making, she observes, records and through making they become removed from their original purpose to create a new point of view. The style is minimal, playful, sophisticated and modern. Being multi-faceted individuals we can be both introverted and extroverted. This understanding is represented in sonemade.com where one can discover simple, comforting geometric shapes side-by-side with edgy artistic statement designs. The common thread is that all designs are handmade by Catherine with art and jewelry in mind. The experience is like wearing a tiny piece of art.

about Catherine

Catherine is Korean-American raised in Los Angeles, CA. She has always been attached to making which led her parents to enroll her in art lessons. In 2001, this took her to the UCLA Department of Art and Architecture. It was during one summer break when her grandma visiting from Korea taught her to crochet and Catherine started making crochet earrings. This was the start in her jewelry journey. In 2005, she started her first job as assistant jewelry designer. Catherine enjoyed changing mediums to semi-precious stones and learning wire wrapping at this small business in Pasadena. In 2006, she decided to switch back to her fine art roots and attended the Vermont Studio Center art residency. There, she met her husband and in 2007 she moved to the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago and stayed for 9 years. Those 9 years were well spent making art, jewelry, traveling and working in architecture. In 2017, she moved to the mountains of Forest Falls, CA with her family. Raising 2 little boys and staying creative with Sone, she seeks to find a healthy and fulfilling balance. She enjoys yoga, road trips and museum time with her boys!

making process

The earrings are made with Art Clay. Art Clay Silver is pure silver powder combined with non-toxic binders and water. When fired, the binders burn away, leaving pure, 99.9% silver. The silver is sourced from reclaimed/recycled silver. The stacking rings are make with sterling silver wire and Art Clay.

Do you take special or custom requests?

Yes! Please message me with the details and I will do my best to work with your requests.

What is Art Clay?

Art Clay Silver is pure silver powder combined with non-toxic binders and water. When kiln, torch or gas stovetop fired, the binders burn away, leaving pure, 99.9% silver.

Tell me about pure silver.

All Sone main silver components are 99.9% pure silver. Ear posts and earnuts are sterling silver. In comparison, sterling silver is mainly an alloy of silver, consisting of nearly 92.5% fine (pure) silver and 7.5% other metals, like copper. Pure silver tarnishes less easily than sterling silver since other metals are not added. Pure silver is more malleable since no other metals are added.

Does Sone make other accessories?

Yes! Stacking rings will be added soon.
